AMD Bulldozer Finally!

I would recommend going Sandy Bridge. I changed 2 months ago from a Phenom 965. Performance is amazing and the price, not that bad.
(AMD fanboys, dont tell me i cant compare the two, i dont care)

But the bigger reason is that a lot of the problems with the new 1155 platform are being ironed out with new bios and the like, so that means more stability and compatibility.

When bulldozer finally does launch, it will most likely (as all new platforms have) have a few problems.

Better go SB

So I take it your privy to the performance and price information for sure then?
You must be well in with AMD to make such a bold statement with sod all information officially out there.
Put it this way if BD's problems could be ironed out just with a Bios update that would be a good thing in its self after release. You know rather than having to do hardware replacement programs and such.

This seems to be rapidly going towards the tired arguement of intel v amd. There have been problems with sandy bridge and I wouldnt expect a few teething problems of BD too. However at the moment with the apparent launch of BD being close I wouldnt advise anyone to go one way or the other until we have price and performance figures of BD. For all we know it could be any mix of slower, faster and cheaper, more expensive.

I should have guessed an AMD FanBoy would bite.

All im saying is Sandy Bridge is a brilliant platorm and in my limited personal experience (not including price / performace reports) i would highly recommend going Sandy Bridge, coming from AMD. And that as all platforms mature they become more stable. I was lucky to change to SB after the B3 boards were released, but would have been a bit annoyed had i been caught in the original hadware changes!

there aren't too many issues when upgrading to new platforms, most users have no problems and those that do generally get updated chipset drivers or a bios update that fix the problem within 6 weeks so i would hardly use that as a reason not to buy AMD.

If that comment was aimed at me I think if you read back a fair bit on my posts, I'm just waiting and seeing on whether to buy SB or BD, unfortunately at my age I have more important things to worry about than which multi million pound company to pledge an allegiance too.
I cant see how advising people they would be better off now to go SB (unless they were desperate to upgrade or personal reasons make it a must) rather than wait a couple of weeks is sensible advice.
If Intel decide to cut prices due to BD its win for me, if BD is a great advance for AMD its a win for me, if BD flops then what do I lose? Using the term fanboy is a bit much just because in my situation it makes sense to wait.

One of the best comment I have read in the CPU forum so far:cool:

Jesus, all i said is that SB is a great upgrade at the moment. I falsely assumed you were a fanboy as you quickly jumped me for making that statement.
Yes i would totally argeed that if you want and are in the situation that enabled you to wait, then wait. But seeing that BD will not be here until Q3, why not wait to see what next from intel.
We can wait and wait and wait, but all i am saying is that as things stand now, there is no better upgrade than SB, unless your willing to wait...

You are right, if you want to upgrade tomorrow, get Sandybridge. I think the general assumption though is that most people don't have to upgrade straight away, and rather can wait a bit to see what the future holds.

Are you 100% sure about that?

Various places the 990FX motherboards are coming up on pre order and the motherboards are showing up on manufacturer websites?

Oh yeah we can wait and wait, but most people probably have there own deadline in their heads as to how long they can hold the upgrade itch off for, I know I have.
But if we went on an infinite loop of wait and wait both Intel and AMD would be broke :O.
And yeah I can now agree with your last statement, rather than the blanket one before.
PS Q3 starts about 7 days after the rumored launch event.

the UD5 looks perfect for my needs, lets hope the chip (BD) itself is perfect for my gaming needs,i dont know why but i would like to take a 3-4 year break from good ol intel. :)

What I was talking about is the positioning. Looking at the latest roadmap it seem that the premium area (which the majority of us are interested in) will also feature Sandybridge E processors.

I know this thread is about AMD but amazed that the 980x is not classed as 'extreme', anyhow what is the 15M all about on the Sandy Bridge-E processors?, its not L3 cache amounts is it?

Does anyone know how the AMD upgrade path will be like after Bulldozer? I've heard it'll be like Intel with new motherboards being needed unlike the transition from AM3 -> AM3+ with the new motherboards being back-wards compatible (or say some current AM3 motherboards being forward compatible). So, does anyone have any information on this? I may be looking too far ahead, but It would be folly to go Bulldozer (if future CPUs aren't compatible with Am3+) if I can go Sandy bridge with the option to go Ivy Bridge later.
