AMD Bulldozer Finally!

The Gigabyte 990XA-UD3 AMD 990X looks like a great board for around £100, if I can get a CPU for around the same amount of money then I'll probably upgrade my current system before it officially becomes an antique :p

Not sure about my need for 8 cores, but a quad will do me fine I reckon and it'll hopefully be a decent upgrade from my E5400. Looking forward to see what gets announced over the next few weeks. :)

Anand shimpi, the guy behind Anandtech, tweeted that BD has been delayed until July. It's still all just rumours but performance is suppose to be fairly poor as well.

edit: Nevermind- beaten to the punch!

If BD is poor, then it will be a sad day for us, as we need companies to be competitive with each other, more for price but also for innovation.

Being a new architecture I have high hopes. You'v seen the massive strides AMD have made with the 5000 and 6000 series gpu's against the Nvidia behemoth, so if they apply the same ideas to their cpu's, they would be a success.

This is from the chap that got Sandy Bridge months before anyone else. I would be a tad careful about his performance estimates of Bulldozer.

Remember,Cray is building the XK6 which uses Bulldozer processors.

Well I just read an article on Anand with their commentary from Computex. Seems that the B0 and B1 steppings of Bulldozer had performance issues. So now waiting on B2, hence the reason the announcement has been bumped from Computex to E3.

According to the article chips will be available around July...

What does him getting ES Sandy Bridge chips have to do with Bulldozer performance estimates?

EDIT: genuine question btw incase you thought i was being a ****:p

He has a close relationship with Intel. He even got Westmere-EX CPUs before any other websites AFAIK.

Nope, P67 boards (which compete with the high end boards for bulldozer) start at £90: http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MB-167-MS&groupid=701&catid=5&subcat=1906

£5 cheaper than AMD's boards.

That is not the correct comparison as you need to look at the same motherboard ranges. The motherboard is a Gigabyte UD3 series:

The cheapest P67 UD3 series motherboard is £115:

However, the build of the AMD motherboard is closer to this £130 UD3 series motherboard:

they use ud3 and ud5 based on the connections and cooling, amd supports more usb3 ports by default as they use a different usb3 chip, the number of sata3 other such things are different too. So the branding of ud3 and ud5 might not mean anything due to the chipsets support different things.

The end of july now...

Preparing the new B2 stepping

According to a news post over at Anandtech.com, AMD's upcoming FX Series CPUs have apparently been pushed for late July, although they were scheduled to be officially announced at Computex. Apparently, AMD has some issues with the current B1 stepping and is waiting for the next B2 stepping.

The problem apparently has something to do with performance issues and in case you somehow managed to miss it, AMD's upcoming FX Series CPUs will be available in 4-, 6- and 8-core versions and should have been released together with the AMD's latest AM3+ socket 990FX chipset. The codename Zambezi FX Series is made on 32nm process and together with the chipset are a part of AMD's Bulldozer platform.

The new CPUs will work on previous AM3 motherboard but without the official AMD support. AMD will focuse on its APUs and its Llano parts for both mobile and desktop markets and most of AMD's show will be about them, of course, we are expecting more details regarding the Bulldozer platform as soon as Computex show heats up tomorrow.

Atleast it will give me two months to save up for the 8 core bd...
