**AMD Fiji Thread**

Its exciting, probably the most I've been about GFX cards for a while. I'm hoping this is a return to form for AMD. I've been on the green team for the last few generations, but I have a soft spot for AMD and will be happy to support them if the product is good enough.

That 980Ti though, its calling to me...

 
I always fail to understand why Amd and Nvidia can never produce enough cards on a launch day to satisfy demand or even for that matter several weeks later. Its very poor in my opinion and always leads to this 'frenzy' of customers trying to get one and more importantly having to pay over the odds. Why can they not hold off until they have enough to go round or am I not being cynical enough here and they do have plenty but are allowing vendors to 'cash in'. I am holding off for the 'frenzy' to diminish to around the end of july beginning of august time when there will be plenty of reviews etc to allow a more reasoned approach to be taken. I guess my age (57) may have something to do with my attitude and cynicism. ;):D

I'm pretty sure they make an initial batch and parcel it out worldwide to mitigate risk of recalls, inexplicably poor uptake etc etc.

The free press and frenzy is probably just a happy knock-on effect for them.
 
Whats the difference between the manufacturers reference cards? Do they actually produce the components ect or are they just an assembly line like when you buy furniture from MFI they just put it together? Only im wondering if there will be any compatibility bonus for little niggles with paring MB manufacturers to GPU, might reduce some crashes than otherwise. Having never considered a reference card before I have seen people raise the issues that its amazing that GPU"s work at all with all the combinations of hardware.

In short: they are manufacturing the cardboard boxes...those are the difference between ref cards.
 
Fury you can't clock the memory full stop and on stock voltage Fury does not clock well at all.

From my understanding Fury X GPUs have voltage determined individually, so they should all be running pretty close to the lowest stable voltage - so we should expect exactly nothing for overclocking on stock voltage.

As for the memory clocks, it could be a number of factors. Possibly the drivers simply aren't ready for it or, possibly, overclocking HBM brings no benefits, or, worse, damage occurs when overclocking HBM just as or even before any symptoms of instability occur. :(
 
10% overclock at stock voltage is fine as that is better than i get from my 290x at stock voltage (needs +50mv for 1100 and +200mv for 1200).

We just need the voltage unlocking and results from that.

I have a feeling with the cooling been so awesome on these cards the overclocking limit is going to be the power draw not temps
 
I can confirm AMD have cards doing 1200 on stock volts.

HBM has enough bandwidth so OC dont yeild results one can expect as its new tech.
Individually cards will have different OC reaches as usual and Gibbo kinda should know that by now.
Problem for nvidia is they are behind both with software as the new standard Dx12 is Mantle AMD developed tech along with the new HBM memory. No way out for them as Fury wins however they try.:)
 
Oh I fully agree. New gpus can make me a bit nuts though. I have the money saved up so I could easily afford it, which makes it that much harder to do the smart thing and wait!


I know man, it's been hard with that £500 980ti this weekend. We gotta stay strong! Although I have a 290 left to tide me over.

You could run into the situation where prices increase... I think the Fury X will stay around the same price or, possibly, go up as interest increased and AMD can't keep up with demand.
 
1200 on stock is surely 20% higher than the benchmarks posted by ATI (as that was on stock & 5% = 5% performance yield according to the charts).

While I take those with a pinch of salt, if (A big if) we can unlock the voltage - we should have plenty of headroom at those temps (40) to push it significantly further & past the G1 980-ti. I can't see why (assuming the HMB isn't impacted at all) why we couldn't take this to 1400 at least (it has the power availability & the temps for it).

The only thing that concerns me is, why if this is the case isn't the voltage & therefore the core clock set higher by default if it is possible & if not - why not?. I've had a fair few gigabyte windforce cards in the past & all of them have overclocked amazingly well, run very quiet & had no issues with - motherboards on the other hand :D

vs the hot noisy 980ti?
