AMD launches B550 motherboards

A couple of years is a long time, AM5 likely won't be out until 2022. I'd rather have a good featured and good performing board that will make the most of Zen3 in the meantime.
I went with the b450 tomahawk, have my CPU running an all core OC with ram clocked at 3800/14 and a 1tb gen 3 drive with read and write over 3000 so not sure how I'm not getting good performance from my 100 quid board?

Later this year I will likely drop in a 3080 or big navi and maybe a 4700x/4900x so trust me I'm not going to be missing out on anything special for the next couple of years.

Sorry, don't understand so B550 is bad.
Can you please write that in words that make sense?

My plan too. :)

X570 is more future proof though, that said most people buying PCIe gen 4 boards oddly buy gen 3 nvmes.
I will be building a system soon, and looking at x570 but waiting to see how b550 will compete or change pricing vs features. I looked into PCIe gen 4 drives and benchmarks but can’t see any difference for gaming between nvme and sata nevermind PCIe gen 4 vs. gen 3, so will be going with one gen 3 drive due to price difference.

That being said, I keep my PCs for a long time so having PCIe gen 4 is ideal for me, as I will most likely upgrade the GPU in future, so might make use of that, plus if there are quantifiable advantages to Gen 4 nvme drives in future that’s a plus too.

No, B550 is far from bad, don't forget you'll be able to install the next gen Ryzens in B550 boards just like X570 boards.

AMD is changing to a new socket away from AM4 down the road, but that is a few years away so don't worry about it for now.

As I've explained a number of times recently, due to a number of factors, some related to Corona virus, others more long term, the cost for the manufacturer to build and supply motherboards has increased dramatically in the last twelve months. There are many factors involved but much of this is down to an increase in the cost of capacitors globally due to a surge in demand from mobile, automotive and IT sectors. Look at the market price of power supplies which use many of the same components and operate on similar, tight margins, and you'll see the same trend. Motherboards at the top end of the price scale have not been as badly affected because the manufacturers had more margin in the product to swallow up some of the increased. The more aggressively priced the board was this time last year, the more obvious this costing increase has been.

As for B550 rumoured pricing. I'm currently hearing contradictory information.
Based on the information that I have in my inbox I'm not currently expecting the pricing to be in the least bit "competitive" but I'm hoping this will change in the next few days.

Well, i've still yet to get a board for my new system, i think at this point i'll wait until B550 is out and i see what the prices will be for the ITX boards (probably the most costly formfactor), since the the x570 ITXs won't be back in stock until the end of june (unless i want to pay £350 for one).

But i'm not expecting the 550 ITXs to be cheap.

Holy friggin crap... the prices of the new B550's listed on Amazon Germany are insane! 200-400EUR!

EDIT - And Amazon UK... some at £550. The world is going mad.

ASUS ROG STRIX B550-E GAMING... £550. Can somene pinch me to see if I'm awake? :D

This is seriously insane pricing and there is no way in hell it is even remotely justified from any build, feature or cost perspective. The PC industry is under assault from shameless bandits, there isn't even any pretense at being sensible any more.

yep, most of these boards are being made in C19 central (where it started), so naturally, they'd be a shortage in supply, hence the price hikes. I could get a X570 strix ITX from amazon (shipped from germany) but that would be over £300, but i won't be doing that. If the ATX 550 boards are pushing £500, i dread to think what the ITXs will be, so looks like i might be going X570 after all. I could get the Crosshair 8 Impact, but that would cost more than the 3900X i got (£9 more, since i got that on a bargain at £370)

Well, the Asus x570s are back in stock on OCUK (for now), i'm about to pull the trigger on the ITX, but it's up to £289! (up from £266 as listed *elsewhere*). Quick question before i do, should i reuse the RAM i have now? (rated for 2666MHz) and just OC it to 3200? or should i bundle a ram kit with the board?

If your going to spend almost 300 quid on a board you might aswell get some decent ram for it. You don't put diesel in a Ferrari!.

well, I don't know what prices they're showing on the store page, since the base price, acording to the confirmation email i just got, the actual base price is £241, £50 vat and £8.75 postage, so i'm not sure where they're getting £289 from
