AMD launches B550 motherboards

Oooohh interesting! Will hold off my upgrade until these are out. I've nothing to take advantage of the pcie 4 yet but it's great to have that upgrade path available

Flagship Master and Taichi can handle 3 X m.2 to match x579 but only one or two at price 4.0 level.

Vrm on the flagship are better then mid range x570 boards and nothing like b450

Aorus b550 master is 14 phases straight, no doublers to Vcore 50/55amps DrMos maybe

70amps and 16 phases going by their website,

That's a curious specification - it has 1 usb c header and no USB 3 type a headers.

Specs says for internal :

  1. 1 x 24-pin ATX main power connector
  2. 1 x 8-pin ATX 12V power connector
  3. 2 x M.2 Socket 3 connectors
  4. 6 x SATA 6Gb/s connectors
  5. 1 x CPU fan header
  6. 1 x water cooling CPU fan header
  7. 4 x system fan headers
  8. 2 x system fan/water cooling pump headers
  9. 1 x CPU cooler LED strip/RGB LED strip header
  10. 2 x addressable LED strip headers
  11. 2 x RGB LED strip headers
  12. 1 x front panel header
  13. 1 x front panel audio header
  14. 1 x USB 3.2 Gen 1 header
  15. 2 x USB 2.0/1.1 headers
  16. 1 x Trusted Platform Module (TPM) header (2x6 pin, for the GC-TPM2.0_S module only)
  17. 2 x temperature sensor headers
  18. 1 x Clear CMOS jumper

External:

Back Panel Connectors
  1. 1 x HDMI port
  2. 2 x SMA antenna connectors (1T1R)
  3. 3 x USB 3.2 Gen 1 ports
  4. 1 x USB Type-C™ port, with USB 3.2 Gen 2 support
  5. 2 x USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type-A ports (red)
  6. 6 x USB 2.0/1.1 ports
  7. 1 x Q-Flash Plus button
  8. 1 x RJ-45 port
  9. 1 x optical S/PDIF Out connector
  10. 5 x audio jacks

Plenty there.

Except the front of your case will have 2 (possibly even 4) usb sockets that aren't connected to anything.

I just find it an interesting omission when the MSI boards are offering both.

Great thing about USB, it's easy to add more, my seven port powered USB 3.0 hub comes in handy :) .

So you just need an additional £6 connector to get sockets that work at 20 year old speeds. I wouldn't want to be plugging a 32gb usb drive and hoping to quickly copy a few files.,

ok I'll bite.
Show me the case that has more than 1 usb 3.2 connector and 2x usb 2.
that isn't more than you would spend on a motherboard.

Lian Li PC-O11 XL - 4 X USB 3.0 (2 on the front, 2 at the front case feet), 1 X USB 3.1 TYPE-C.

Granted it's probably just about the same price on the basis that the X570 Aorus Master is currently £375 so if the B550 is half of that the case would be the same price.

And my point was that if I bought that B550 Aorus Master board the only front socket that was working at the correct speed would be the type c. Heck it would be true if I went for the PC-O11 none XL case. Now I know that the B550 requires manufacturers to make trade offs but I'm not sure many people would be happy to trade off a usb connector for a third NVMe socket - I suspect a lot of customers will be having a confused phone call with support asking where the socket is.

Well most cases have like 2x USB 2.0 and 1 or 2x USB 3.0/3.2, so cases that have more like the one you stated are not common for most PC users, like I said better of just use an external powered USB 3/3.0 hub, a lot cheaper then that case ;) .

Otherwise you have to choose a motherboard that can take advantage of all your case USB ports and that would limit your choice.

Btw USB 3.0 /3.2 explained here for those that don't know, https://www.cnet.com/how-to/usb-3-2-explained-making-sense-of-current-and-confusing-usb-standard/ .

I want to keep on trucking with my B350F, but worried about dead ends

On one level true, on another level a large upgrade is a likely time for people to replace their case.
