AMD Polaris architecture – GCN 4.0

You do realise that The polaris cards are low end cards for the mainstream market, they are going to be replacing the 380/370 cards. They aren't going to be anywhere the performance of the 1080, probably not even the 1070.

A lot of people seem to think that the Polaris cards are going to be competing with the 1080/1070.

It really is pointless regurgitating this message as none of them seem to hear what your saying even though many have said it countless times. They need to have their victory to make themselves feel good, even though it is comparing apples to oranges in different supermarkets.

What I do find amusing is that most are believing a rumour on one single video that they are delaying until October.....until we hear it from a few credible sources then it's just a rumour to get people to pre-order a 1070/1080. No-one knows with 100% certainty what the hell is going on.....that's it. End of.

I really hope AMD hasn't got any problems (and to be clear if the rumours are right the problem is most likely related to GF) but at this stage wouldn't rule it out, I honestly have no idea what AMD will be saying at the end of the month.

However, the most important thing for AMD is that Zen works out. If their GPU business collapses it will be a shame but if Zen is a failure then there really is no more AMD. I would love Zen to kick some ass, been ages since I had an AMD CPU, and what I like about AMD CPUs compared to GPU you never have any driver issues or problems running in linux.

But the problem is if the 14NM LPP process cannot produce GPUs with sufficient clockspeeds,Zen is also not in a good place as I believe it uses the same process.

Now,OFC CPUs are not the same as GPUs in terms of hardware logic, etc but it is still a concern though.

Can you point out where people are believing the Polaris delayed rumour?
I can't see anyone saying they believe in it, only re-posting the news form other sources. I find it has very little credibility but we wont know until the end of the month.

AMD is fabbing Zen at TSMC though, and there may well have been a good reason why they put their most important eggs in the TSMC basket?

Doesn't sound good, as still to this day, no ones seen an actual proper card.

Unless they are going to do a Nvidia, and show the actual cards at the end of this month at their next event.

Most likely, that's the way both AMD and Nvidia have been moving the last couple of years, as it's the only way to prevent leaks. The best way to keep a secret is not to tell anyone, so everything is played very close until the absolute last second.

That is from the last showing of Polaris,a few weeks ago.

The left is Polaris 10 showing system power consumption at 127W and the right is Polaris 11 showing system power consumption at 79W.

I think it just shows how all of us just don't know what to expect with AMD with regards to launches anymore. There isn't that confidence people had with ATI.

:(

I do understand the uncertainty due to past history, but again this may also be more smoke and mirrors to put a dent in AMDs press event. AMD may be on track for June with Polaris and on track for Q1 2017 for Vega for all we know.

It would be a nice surprise if P10 did give the 1070 a run for it's money and an even bigger surprise if Vega was released in October and blew the 1080 out of the water (That is what would be needed to restore confidence in AMD right now if I am honest). Be great though wouldn't it. :D

If AMD were using the same process as Nvidia this would be a lot harder to believe and even still a rumor based of a internet forum post is about as credible as Ed Milliband being Prime Minister. IMO I think people are just too excited and are running out of things to talk about.

AMD need to do a deal...

Buy a Polaris 10 early June for £200, trade it in for £200 off a Vega in October.

It won't help those with a good card now(390X/980TI), but for those of us who've been waiting to upgrade....

Would make a lot of people think twice about getting a 1080, when we all know something better is coming both camps 5-10 months later.

Not sure AMD know the meaning of good marketing though.

I'm pretty sure AMD would like to actually make money on Polaris.

That is why the AMD AIB partners are angry because it is a difficult marketing message and they have no halo products.

Oh, so now it's fact, from a clickbait article that most people have dismissed? You were calling it a vague rumour a few days ago and now you are stating it as fact. LOL R7Slayer was right.

I'm pretty sure they'd like to make market share at the expense of Nvidia. Won't be doing that if people buy 1070/80.

Also a lot of people will keep there Polaris, as Vega will still cost more.

AMD are so far in the red, they need to make money and your proposal is not going to make them money. They want to sell more GPUs than NVidia of course but to do that, they need to release something that has mass appeal.

Do people understand how the 1070 salvaged part works? If it wasn't a salvaged part but a native part with those sizes how big do you think the core would be? It's got 30% less bandwidth, 20% less shaders, likely less rops. If it was 30% smaller than the full Gp104 then it would be very close in size to Polaris 10 anyway.

If AMD planned for GDDR5x then they'd have 30% more bandwidth available to them and make a Polaris 10 30% bigger. Now the real question is how much gddr5x volume is there in the next 3-6 months. It could be that Nvidia went bigger but have small volume of gddr5x and as such say 90% of all gp104 sales are 1070s rather than 1080s. Maybe gddr5x volume is fine and they sell a more usual 30/70 mix maybe.

Either way if Polaris is efficient there is no reason to believe it can't compete very well with the 1070.

Is the assertion that P10 is equivalent performance to a 390 based in facts?

Or is it just that, an assertion.

Because at 236mm^2 its way bigger than a 390X, so for those asserting 390 performance what the logic behind behind your assertion?
