AMD Polaris architecture – GCN 4.0

+1

Probably taken note of the absolute slating they've been getting on forums (grassroots) over thie lack of it. It has been pretty dire

TBH, I doubt they've paid any attention to forums, because there would have been loads of professional industry marketing and PR people that could have told them that.

They have people like Matt and co active on forums. Just a quick glance would tell them the sentiment. Nvidia has known the importance of forums going back over 10 years,so it would make sense for AMD to keep a pulse on how the enthusiast community feels.

:p

Looks like Computex it is..just 2 weeks to go.

Read the big text at the top :D.

That is just the email subject. Anyone could have written that and forwarded it on to someone, wrongly assuming it was the Polaris launch.

Polaris might well be launched but nothing that is definitely written by AMD says so, even on the web link about the event.

I really hope they launch Polaris at Computex as I would like to have the all the info before potentially buying a 1080 or 1070 in June. If not I might just give up waiting and go for Pascal.

From the latest rumours I don't think we will hear much about Polaris at Computex.

Stuff like this is hard to ignore:
https://www.reddit.com/r/Amd/comments/4jcf29/psa_the_call_on_518_at_9am_ct_about_polaris_is/

And the official AMD Computex website doesn't mention Polaris in the slightest so the screenshot if the email invite has a fake subject.

And if you look at the Black and white facts AMD published, they said Polaris is on schedule and the AIB partners are not frustrated. They didn't say Polaris would be launched at computex, they didn't say AIB partners will have Polaris cards at Computex, and they didn't give an official launch date. Their earlier statement was back to school, so even an early July hard launch would be perfectly reasonable and on schedule.

E3 isn't June 14-16 which would be perfect for back to school, make a launch and get products out by the end of the month to mid-July

Well I think going back to the discussion we had earlier,I pretty much though late June or July would be the time period AMD would be launching the cards.

But AMD does still need to keep interest going with some bumpf, otherwise Nvidia essentially has weeks of free advertising ahead of them.

True. Like if I knew the Polaris XT would be close enough to 1070 performance, but for say £250, I would wait and buy that.

Bu as it is, I am not convinced that it is and as a result see no reason to wait :(

The thing is I never understood the rush to need and buy a new AMD or Nvidia card at launch - you are more likely to be price gouged and more likely to have cards with issues too. Maybe if you are serial upgrader and have sold your old card I suppose.

Sure if you really need to run a game now,but unless it is Doom,I don't see many big titles left for the year?? Deus Ex?? :Shrugs:

I only have a GTX960 4GB myself - but even if the sub £200 Polaris range launched tomorrow,I would quite happily wait for the GP106 based cards to launch first in three months. I would rather see what the competition has to offer(or not).

I would rather be sure I got the best card in my price bracket.

My last three cards were the HD5850,GTX660 and GTX960. I bought those all after the equivalent AMD/ATI or Nvidia cards were launched. I paid well under £150 for all of them.

But maybe I am a bit more casual I suppose. Only really played a few 100 hours of FO4,TR and Planetside 2 this year, and if my system can't handle a game I can hold off buying it and do something else.

This board is heavily slanted to people who tend to get one of the higher tier cards. Its a main hobby for a lot of us so stretching the odd pound is less of a concern and yeah some of us just want the new shiny thing to play with without worrying too much.

Ive already had my moneys worth back off my old cards and I'll still have money left over even having bought a VR headset and a 1080, so... *shrug*

But then according to JPR, enthusiast cards accounted for double the market share they did a couple of years ago, so it seems to be a growth market

I suppose its horses for courses - I tend to more interested in the tech side, but as I am into other things only game on and off,so only tend to upgrade when I cannot run a game or find a good deal.

It might partly down to the fact we have not seen something as boundary pushing as Crysis and I spent a lot on rigs to run that.

I suppose I cannot justify a £300 card currently,but could justify a £300 lens or a £200 tripod.

Also, not so into VR too which is not helping.

Maybe if Cyberpunk 2077 comes along next year and looks awesome,I might just get a higher tier card.

I agree with what you are saying. But on this occasion I do not feel like waiting, as I feel like I have been waiting for ages for a 16nm card. I skipped the Fury X and 980Ti as they were too expensive for what they were.

Now that 16nm is here, I can finally get a 1070 which will be pretty much nearly half the price of a 980Ti and it should hopefully be better than it in every way. Also let's not forget the 1070 will trounce the 980Ti in VR performance.

This will keep me happy for 6-12 months and then once all the big boys are out, will sell it and grab one of those.

I would agree it was like three or four months, but another month or so is not going to change much IMHO. If AMD does make a competitive card to the GTX1070,it will reflect it in prices and if they don't,the GTX1070 will still be around the same price as before.

Either way,I don't know your schedule so maybe waiting a month is not really an option.

im going to be sad face if Polaris doesnt launch at or before the first of june. I sold my 980ti to be able to afford something new and we all know the value of 980ti is dropping fast so i had to do it now if i wanted just a bit of cash which i got. Would suck to have to wait 2 months and be stuck on a 5850 in the meantime.. Its actually what made me buy the 980ti last year.. nothing from AMD at the time. Would be nice if they could sync their releases a bit or be ahead for once in that regard cause i really like their hardware.

It is an option, just feel like I will have waited for nothing as amd have not convinced me that they have anything worth waiting up their sleeve on this occasion. The most I see myself waiting is mid June.

This is why I say, bloody leak something so I may consider waiting but alas all I hear is they are releasing a 390X performance class gpu. That does not excite me, we have had that performance available for like 3-4 years... :(

I am hopeful they do a good job with Vega though, would rather grab one of those than an over priced TX next year.

Same here. I like their hardware. They seem to get longer support and are priced more consumer friendly. Also great driver support too in my experience.

I'm planning to hold off buying until about November, we should all know what's what and there should be plenty of stock and stable prices, I've been burnt before buying on launch

I share the same concern as you, we both seems to like their hardware but when you dont know what is coming up and the only thing you have are vague rumours from dodgy sites its suddenly very hard to justify waiting that long.

Now that nvidia has shown their hand AMD might as well drop some information, including pricing, and benchmarks as well and even if Polaris 10 is slower it would still be much better i feel. They dont have to include model names if they want nvidia to stay a bit confused but something like "here is 'unknown' card running this game at this setting and it gets this much FPS and MSRP is XXX dollars.
