AMD Polaris architecture – GCN 4.0

AMD is not competing with 1080, so they are not in a rush to release polaris.
the question is, do they have the performance to compete with 1070, if they do, they will release polaris before june10 at least on paper with full disclosed infos.
if by june 10 we still dont have more info about polaris 10, then performance is too low to be competing with 1070.

Considering the 1070 is such a cut down version of the 1080, then I believe Polaris will be able to beat it.

Though all NVIDIA have to do is crank up the gameworks effects to destroy any real advantage AMD may have, making the 1070 the safe bet. (IMO).

I think Gameworks is dead, too many devs burnt by it.

Yep. you can disable the games-works features and the games are still terrible, which is black and white evidence that it is the developers fault.

If i remember correctly you couldn't disable all the Gameworks features.

All I know is that my 980M laptop runs several Gameworks titles better than my 390X desktop system does, hence why I'll be getting a 1080 on release. Plus the incredible power efficiency is also very desirable, as I'll be moving to a smaller form factor case at the same time.

It also seems that the 1070 may be limited in the clocking side of things since its boost clock is lower along with its base clock.

Everyone knows that on paper the 390 is better than the 970. And even pricing it LESS than the 970. The 970 goes on to be the best selling card in the world...
Doesn't speak very highly of us consumers does it?

Do me a lemon.... when the 970 was released it was the 290x it was up against, before all this asynchronous stuff and before AMDs big overhaul with the crimson drivers, they were literally neck and neck. There was nothing between them except power consumption. So little difference that when i came to buying a card i had to created a poll because i couldnt decide; MSI 290x lightning vs the gtx 970 infin8 black. voting was neck and neck and in the end i went with the 970 because of the price and it being easier to keep cool. Performance wasnt a deciding factor. It's only recently that the 970 is now firmly behide but that is not something we could have known at the time.

Yeh. I'll still checkout the 1070 reviews with interest, but it seems NVIDIA learn from making the 970 too close to the 980 for this generation. Either that or the 16nm yields are absolutely terrible so they had no choice.

They've done it from time to time in previous generations - the 470 came with a big clock reduction over the 480 but overclocked like crazy - 607MHz out the box and most could be turned upto 800MHz with no voltage increase I ran mine most of the time at 840MHz with minimal extra voltage but just before I upgraded I had them stable at 900MHz with extra voltage - albeit with 100% fan speed as I never got around to putting custom cooling on them.

I suspect the 1070 will probably overclock quite well if it is just the same cores as 1080s but with some bits disabled.
