AMD Polaris architecture – GCN 4.0

First CPU chat about Zen, and now Nvidia talk... This thread would only be 2 pages long if it was talk about just Polaris. But instead its 6 pages, 2 pages of people whining about AMD CPU performance, and 2 pages of Nvidia are the greatest talk. Sigh. I only lurk here for news, but it seems to be the same people derailing the threads all the time.

Maybe the CPU and GPU subforums need a "bashing" thread where people can fight over which team is best and that way these threads wont get ruined. Basically the OP is the only post in this thread that is worth a read if your here for the title.

Its a good idea, on another forum we have an AMD vs Nvidia and an Intel vs AMD topic, where the top fighters of both sides can slaughter each others posts and common sense so the informal topics stay mostly clean.

Can we get back on topic please?

Perhaps you shoudln't of taken it off topic with childish behavior.

I agree, all this conspiracy nonsense about Nvidia sabotaging drivers can be deleted.

I'm still waiting for an intelligent response to my post,
http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showthread.php?t=18711396&page=14
evidently I hit a nerve with some people because there was just ridiculous childish rubbish posted in reply.

I'll restart the adult conversion:
1) Shipping 2 Engineering samples doesn't mean much, where is the FuryX2?
2) One of those shipments was a year ago and certainly wasn't 14nm Polaris.
3) We know AMD are ready to release a new low-end Polaris chips to combat 750Ti and 950Ti, they said so themselves. We don't need to incorrectly infer this form shipping manifests for products that actually aren't Polaris.

DAMAGE CONTROLL!!!11!!! PANIC !!1111!!! OMG!!!1123211

Why are you so anti-AMD, you are not allowed to post facts in this thread!! You have to praise the AMD gods, the truth isn't allowed here!

This made me spill my tea....:D:p:D

The problem is some people just take the threads off topic. I make an on-topic pertinent reply and it quickly gets followed by off-topic trolling:

How do you stop such posters ruining other threads?

Weren't similar results shown for older AMD cards suffering as well?

I can't remember the entire thread but someone pointed it out if I recall correctly.

As far as i know this has not been the case. Performance seems to be strong from the 7 series up to the Fury. Kepler performance in recent titles does not seem good at all and a lot of these titles are Gameworks. Any how some of this is down to GCN making Kepler look bad but i think some of it can be put down to Nvidia support.

The truth in it is AMD cards slowed clawed back some performance against NVidia, but that is where the truth ends.

With all due respect this is revisionist thinking at best and disingenuous at worst. 780Ti went from ~ 15% slower than 290X in W3 to round 5% faster with the updated driver. That is not clawing some performance back that is a massive swing in performance. It was not limited to W3 and in fact some people on Reddit were seeing problems long before W3 was released.

Relative performance from Setp 2014 - Mar 2015. No way a 7970 should catchup with a 780.

I wouldn't get too excited, these are engineering samples, only 2 samples of one of the GPUs. As the link shows, FurX2 samples were also shipped in November, but no where to be seen yet.

Nvidia has Pascal samples shipped in the summer and are shipping Pascal based Drive PX2 to customer within a couple of months.

Plu I am nto at all convinced at the analysis in that link, one of the GPus was released in January 2015, 1 year ago - that certainly isn't a 14nm Polaris, more likely soemthign form the 300 series or a totallly unreleased GPU.

Probably waiting for Computex.

Off topic Nvidia will ship sooner fanboi rant.

We have all the 300 series. what more is there?

In your opinion, in reality it isn't. Be warned that you can be suspended form OCUK for calling members fanboys so i would edit your post if I was you.

A completely unreleased chip they used for internal testing. Who know and who cares, it was shipped 1 year ago and is certainly not Polaris and even if it was it just proved how pointless shipping manifests of engineering samples are. Do you honestly think AMD had working Polaris GPUs 1 year ago and sat and did nothing with them?

So how does your opinion supersede my opinion, You know nothing more than i do so how do you presume to slam my opinions as wrong and what you write as fact?

For a brand new architecture its not an uncommon time used to fine tune and iron out bugs, development of new CPU / GPU architectures is years not months.

There is no proof of any Pascal or Polaris shipments. Who's to say the codenames have even been obfuscated. They could just be old chips on new boards for all we can see. AMD have said publically they taped out, NV have not to my knowledge.

The only "proof" that one will get out sooner is AMD demoing Polaris.

Reality check.

put them (and you) into a sub group where you can all argue together and leave us alone? :p

PS i never singled you out, there as been multiple people in this thread taking it off topic.

What a lot of people fail to realize is that if there weren't any AMD cards to compare with then Nvidia would in effect have got away with nerfing drivers and put the blame on the kepler cards being slower at tessellation, etc.

In this case the existence of AMD was a life saver for the kepler cards. Maybe those hating on AMD should open their eyes a bit.

Since Polaris sips power, lets stick 4 core on one board and call it a Rage MAXX Voodoo5 6000 Spiny rims edition!

But regardless, it would be brilliant to get a laptop with one of those chips. Currently in the market for one for Uni work and some light gaming on campus.

Why is Nvidia the main talk in this AMD thread? I understand the news is slow and we all want some info but Nvidia bashing/praising isn't the news I want to read about. Anyways, as time goes on I am sure we will get some leaks and some of them will be correct but most will be wrong but I look forward to seeing what is what. I personally can't wait for Polaris and the sooner the better.
Funny you never have anything to say when Kaap was mentioning about overclockers dream or anything in the Nvidia threads. You don't need to try and tilt the arguments to avoid any negativity towards Nvidia while not doing the same for AMD.

I agree with you that we should stick to AMD ideally but try and be less biased or obviously one sided. Funny, I saw him in the thread but he seems to not mind when things are banging the other way? Kind of hypocritical to always swap between the morale high ground and getting in the mud for some slinging when the sock is on the other foot or the other thread in this regard. I hope AMD offers no excuses this time, hdmi 2.0, lower power consumption, performance and overclocking etc. I think we'll still have people always recommending Nvidia cards in these forums and say something like shadow play or whatnot though I guess.

Came in for Polaris info and discussion... Sees people talking about nVidia... Leaves thread...

I'm interested in both threads so it felt worth mentioning that we need to maintain standards on both and not double standards like some. I do believe we should stick on topic of course but your post is no better really.

Not much can be said about polaris at this stage without waiting for more info but I'm most impressed by AMD's route into the Nvidia camp with the freesynch through HDMI. Don't know how I feel about it though as it's a route in and a route out as I might end up needing a gsynch monitor to make sure I can have synch with whichever card I want. Doubt I care too much though really, probably just get an AMD card if they don't mess up bad as I'm not the kind of person who cries over every 2% performance and tries to slam everything for being 2fps lower. If AMD carry on with the current trend of costs for freesynch monitors and amd cards it'll still be far better value than the Nvidia alternative.
