AMD Polaris architecture – GCN 4.0

AMD need to leak something to keep us excited until official word is out :D

If nvidia actually launch shortly, AMD may lose a lot of sales again. I for one may pick up a pascal as long as nvidia do not take the **** too much with the pricing.

But if I know I can get similar or better performance from amd for cheaper, I will certainly hold out :)

Seeing that Polaris (mainstream) and the new Pascal (high end) cards are in different tiers i fail to see how AMD would lose sales.

I love it when some people see unveil and assume it is a launch, and think because AMD did not show anything for a month or 2 they are now behind? So all the echo chambering really paid off for nvidia :D After all big Pascal was launched in April, wasn't it? :D

On the other hand I love how AMD was so cocky about their Polaris product saying that they have release head start. Don't count your chickens before they hatch.

Nvidia might release, but it does not mean they will be able to release in bulk. Where as AMD are more than likely capable of releasing in bulk from launch day.

Also on the note of the 1080 results, it seems rather poor considering its running at 1.6 - 1.8ghz and edging past overclocked 980Ti's.

Where if the rumours are true, Polaris 10/Ellesmere XT is Furyx/980Ti performance with a clock of only 1.150 Mhz. I think it looks as if the AMD part has the higher performance and overclock headroom this round.

I know, I am just talking from both sides of the fence to not upset certain people here ;)

If I go from AMD side, Unveil is just unveil and logically thinking nvidia cards should be here end of summer in quantities. But I don't know that.
If I go from nvidia side of things, and assume that unveil is unveil, launch is computex, then AMD looks completely ridiculous with their earlier claims of head start. Which one is true I don't know.

Also I have a strange feeling that 3dmark result was done on overclocked card or at least heavily boosted one. As 1.8ghz is a bit steep even for nvidia on 16nm ;)

The last we heard from AMD was "back to school" which is like August, maybe optimistically July at the earliest. Unveil today strongly indicates late may/early June launch of actual product for Nvidia. So yeah that does look like nvidia have gone from being "6 months behind AMD" to launching ahead of them.

Charlie strikes out again.

Back to school is mid june to late september, it pretty much covers the summer holiday period depending on which country you come from.

And is that months ahead of May? Unless my calendar is back to front that still makes the people saying nvidia are months behind wrong

Although having lived in the US i dont remember ever having back to school events in June, mainly August

back to school period could count as the day they leave in retail. Infact some places put back to school stuff out when some of the poor kids are still AT school hah.

The most important months of the Back to school period as defined by industry market research leaders like Google and Ipsos MORI are July and August, but some other sources says it starts in June.

The middle of the year quote was given by the AMD CEO,Lisa Su.

Go,back earlier in the thread, there are plenty of links about it.

Are we again at this pointless debate about what does back to school mean? :D

Its all pointless until AMD and Nvidia have a hard launch with tons of stock available. Like I said earlier in the thread, even if AMD launches next month or in July,I expect it will be like the HD7970 and it will take weeks for the stock to be actually available.

It makes sense to at least paper launch and get the price and performance figures out or at least leak the info. Then people know what they want and they can just wait. I have no problem waiting 3-4 weeks or longer if I know for sure AMD will offer a better deal.

They could be waiting to see what Nvidia is doing too - was reading the Polaris thread on Overclock.net,and someone actually look at one of these slides AMD released a few months ago:

He figured out the chip pictured was the HD4870! It might be AMD hinting at something. The HD4870 came a few weeks after the GTX280 was launched.

When did AMD say six months - I like how some are now making up things to on purpose to trash this thread.

All we know is that Lisa Su said middle of the year and in time for the back to school period, which is the middle of the year, most likely targetting late June or July.

Plus that is the other thing - the mainstream GP106 and GP107 is meant to be Q3 2016.

Until we can buy one of the Polaris or Pascal cards and put in a rig,and/or see them mass shipped to OEM in quantity,it is all a moot point argueing for E-PEEN purposes.

AMD could do a Fury X and sell 200 Polaris 11 cards on the 1st of June and have pre-orders for the next two months and claim they launched first.

Nvidia coulld actually hard launch two weeks later and have 100000 cards, and be considered "behind".

HD4870 was a stonking card with an had excellent value. If the new Polaris is anything like that I will get that instead of pascal.

Depends if Polaris 10 will actually compete with GP104. If it doesn't, which it may not, then this would affect nothing as they'd be in different market tiers. In fact, it could have the opposite effect - convincing people to step up to the next performance tier with Pascal out of impatience/lust.

.

No, no one said AMD said that.

Every time a rumour popped up in the Pascal thread about Pascal launching any time before September, certain people jumped all over it saying it couldnt possibly be true because AMD had already demoed Polaris and that they were "months ahead" of nvidia in possibly being able to release anything this gen.

They were pretty adamant that nvidia would be 2-3 months behind at the very least e.g. AMD in July and Nvidia with nothing until September.

Such a shame AMD were not 6 months ahead and I would have liked to have seen them out first but if they are late, not good at all.

Gregster this post is a bit odd from you, where did you get 6 months from? AMD should be half a year ahead? Lol.

Also aren't Nvidia and AMD both rumored to be launching new cards in, i.e for sale in June? At the same time ish. I thought Nvidia were doing a paper launch today?
