AMD Polaris architecture – GCN 4.0

It would be nice if AMD can get Fury X/GTX980TI rivalling performance out of the highest end Polaris 10 SKU as they might have a chance in catching the GTX1070 and if the GTX1080 price is anything to go for,Nvidia might have given them some leeway unless the GTX1070 is like £300 at launch.

Still seeing it has more R9 390X level though.

from what it looks like the 1070 will be pushing 400 at launch

People talk about fast cars and so on but when they buy a car they dont buy that fast car due to its expensive both in cost and maintance. They buy a smaller car, not as fast not designed to be the fastest but that fullfill what you want to do with it. cruising for chicks and boys or some other worthwhile stuff.

Koduri said it well, AMD changed strategy with the design for Polaris.
we find out soon what he meant and designed.

Aye and sheep and stuff ;)

Car analogies do not work at all, they are totally different.

you could try a space analogy to keep in theme with the Polaris name?

What makes you think the P10 would be slower than a 390x? i mean seriously? the 970 is already slower than the 390x by up to 10%
I did not say that. I was going by what Yamaha was estimating.

My personal expectation is that P10 will ultimately be 5-10% better than a 390X at around £200.

If they can do a lot better than that, then awesome. I'd be there Day 1 for 980Ti performance even at £250.

Hopefully AMD can pull something off, im not holding my breath though, but i still have a slither of hope they can pull something off.

If they can match or get close to the 980ti performance for circa £300 they are laughing, anything below that level of performance and they need to price it under £200 realistically.

Then at the top end they need to beat a 1080 at a lot lower than the rumored £600+ which will invariably drop down to around £530-550 by the time Vega arrives, so they will need to come in around that price point if the performance is better, or way under if its worse.

Thats the only way i can see them clawing back any market share, and in all honesty i think faith in AMD products is now so low, they actually need to beat Nvidia not only in performance across all spectrums but also price, if they can manage that then people will start buying their products again in droves.

As it stands right now, people are either buying Nvidia straight away, or holding off to see what AMD brings and then end up buying Nvidia anyhow, especially at the top end.

Quite a lot of members here bought the FuryX to only return it for a 980ti, that right there tells you enough about AMD currently

I would rather temper my expectations as it could be another Fury. But,OTH,it might be the next HD4870.

I would rather be suprised by the performance than dissapointed.

:p:D

Most things point to it being Hawaii with all the GCN4 improvements. And even if it is a new part with just 2560 SP's it would still be faster than Hawaii at the same clocks.

The Once I think I agree with you:eek:

You always did but never realized it. :)

449$ early edition.
370$ later.

Hey if P10 is 390x (8gb) for £200 - £250 I'll be all over it, as the 390x is the card I'm currently looking to get

Its new tech, I tend to favour new vs whatever came out before.
you have all the latest support for displays HDR and any improvements with power usage and what else.

10 days to go for some more info on the shiny bright Polaris

I'm concerned AMD are aiming for lower TDP over performance. Does anyone actually care about TDP when its pretty cheap to buy a decent PSU?

I'm on a 290X but I'm itching to upgrade. I can't go NVIDIA as I have a freesync monitor. Really hoping Polaris 10 is not just a cheaper 390X.

I don't mind a lower TDP as long as the performance is decent for the price, but I do own a small form factor PC.

Pretty sure that GP100 will come near enough around when Vega does, so the price of the 1080 is likely going to drop further than you're saying(it's already going to be lower once we start getting non-Founder's Edition cards). It's just too high and will not fit in with a cut down GP100 version in its expected price position.

And Vega will probably blow away the 1080 unless it's another smaller-than-expected card, so Nvidia would react accordingly to that as well in terms of pricing.

As far as the Fury X goes, I wouldn't go using that as the sole example of AMD's state. Fiji was a bit of a bust, I dont think anybody can deny that. They overpromised, were using expensive new memory technology that was immature and did not justify the costs and simply couldn't compete with a more efficient rival in the GM200. But I'd also say they've done very well with Hawaii, even if they've had to resort to more aggressive pricing to do so.

Nah im not swapping, i'll just use it at 144Hz, as i managed fine at that before FreeSync came along, so i can manage again, a monitors not going to dictate which brand i buy. :p

Then what happens if Vega comes in October and is faster than the GTX1080 and you can also use FreeSync.

:p

If I were you I would hold off to see how much performance AMD can get out of Polaris 10. Add probably a 50% bigger die and HBM2 and and then you might get a good indication of performance.

Is it today that AMD make a Polaris announcement or have I got that wrong?

If you are thinking about the 18th event, i heard more recent that it is just an investors event. And that Polaris wont be talked about much. it is also only an hour and half jobbie if i am remembering right.
