AMD Polaris architecture – GCN 4.0

Looks like the 1070 has 980Ti levels of performance from an early preview on a French site in one of the Nvidia threads

Will Polaris be able to match that for the same money or less? I am getting doubtful

And your comment is out of place in this discussion. There are a dozen others that could have it's place.

If the 1070 has the performance of the 980Ti that means DX12 TW Warhammer going to be pants. Who in right mind want to spend money on it?

Hell even the 1080 cannot have it's price justified, because is beaten by the simple Fury let alone the FuryX/Nano (on the same benchmark).

Polaris 10 is made on a denser process so massaging of figures does not change the fact that Nvidia is using a 314mm2 chip and Polaris 10 is a 232mm2 one.

We have some new leaks about Polaris can we at least talk about that?

That is pretty good since that is an R10 480. People on that site failed to realise that the RX is Roman numeral for R10 and it's not the 480X that they had running.

The 480 at nano level performance for less than £180 would be a hot seller but the benchmark seems to show that its actually faster than that. I think even a 980ti manages about 60 @1440P and this 480 is matching that?

A 480X could therefore be potentially as fast or faster than FuryX/TitanX level.

Please don't get people's hopes up for a card that's faster than TitanX at £180.

It's not even slightly realistic. AMD won't give you that. nV won't give you that. Nobody will this gen.

Yeah I think matching 980ti is optimistic but even if it matches a Fury nano that is a nice deal for a £180 card imo.

I think the most we should hope/dream for is fury level performance from the 480 but for around 250 pounds and not 180. I would love to be proven wrong here and it was better but i think this is best case scenario. I would not mind such a card though.

If that is indeed the 480 and they have a 480x and it drops at 980ti / Titanx perf for under £300 I think it will need to be closer to £250 as the 1070 is going to be similar in speed and price I believe, but I think the AMD card will have the advantage this node in regards to better headroom for over clocking, I think people will soon find out the 1080 and 1070 will be a bit stunted for over clocking, I definitely have a feeling that the 1070 in particular is not going to be as to clock much higher out the box

Why? It will likely clock just as well as the 1080 (so 2ghz+ easy)

Dunno I just have a feeling that the card will not be as great as everyone is hoping it will be, just a niggling suspicion is all, I have no evidence or proof but just a feeling.

Sorry to be the harbinger of doom for Nvidia, I know you take this personally mate :(

I doubt it.

GCN (even though it's a new version) clocks lower than Kepler and Maxwell on 28nm. And 14nm is meant to be slightly denser and more power efficient than 16nm, but not clock as high.

So AMD are likely going for power efficiency and IPC rather than clockspeed.

His response was to me suggesting the 1070 won't be a decent clocker. Nothing to do with Polaris

Oh, oopsie.

He's probably right though. The 970 and 980 clocked to basically the same clockspeed, and the 980 Ti generally clocked higher than the TX.

So there's generally a precedent for the cut down card matching or mildly beating the fully enabled one in clockspeed.

Not sure how its out of place, I think you're just offended by it. I want the best card for £350 and I'm hoping AMD provide that with Polaris, if they dont and the 1070 is the best card for £350 then I'm going to be kicking myself for investing in Freesync

Its perfectly in line with the thread as I and many others are in the same boat whilst waiting for Polaris news

Lol what?

It's true, you seem a bit butthurt anytime anyone suggests anything anti Nvidia in this and other threads, it's just an observation, it's OK tho to feel like that mate, your definitely not alone in that on these forums.

I reckon we may see some more leaks on Polaris over the next few days too, definitely looking forward to solid info now
