AMD® Phenom™ II Overclocking Thread

Hex - sorry what do you mean stock clock? My timings are the ones that the memory is rated for.

Vogon - I am looking in the SPD tab in cpu-z and the command rate boxes are greyed out and empty. Odd. Am I looking in the right place?

Thanks for the help guys.

maybe thats it. I dont have an 800 column. Ill give 2T a go. Cheers.

also its odd that cpu-z says 1.5volts but the voltage is supposed to be 1.65 (or is cpu-z reporting what I have it set to?)

1.5v is the jedec standard for DDR3. If your sticks dont have an XMP profile or similar, you wont find any of the info for what the sticks are specced to run at in the spd. Take my spd tab for example:

I can just select the XMP profile in the BIOS and it sorts itself out, you will most likely need to enter the info manually (as I had to with my previous DDR2 sticks)

Oh I see. So cpu-z is just giving me generic information? Guess I will have to have a dig and see if I can find out what the info for my RAM should be. Thanks.

Yes and no, the jedec standard spd profiles are designed to be fail safes to work in any board. And they have to conform to jedec spec obviously.

A lot of sticks dont have the non jedec profiles built in, which therefore means you have to input the info yourself to make your sticks run at the speed/latency you bought them for

Thats a lot for that. Also just found this (same as my mobo). Looks like it might be worth over volting the chipset (vdd nb). I have never played with that setting so I now have a new hope. Annoyingly cant test until tomorrow evening.

Are there likely to be any heating problems with increasing the Vdd nb?

VDDNB = CPU-NB (IMC)

That is what I have set to 1.3000V on mine.

You will deffo need to give it some more juice if you are OC'ing the CPU-NB speed and running 1600MHz mem.

Thought you said you'd tried 1.35V on the CPU-NB already

Ah ... confusion. There is another option in my BIOS next to VDDNB which is something else (cant remember what its called). I thought that was what they were referring to. Bugger. Was sure that would be it. Oh well.

EDIT: I was thinking of 'cpu VDDA voltage'. - anyone got any idea what that is?

EDIT2: Looking back at that thread it looks like they are talking about vddnb voltage and 'chipset voltage' as two different things both of which might benefit from extra volts... Anyone know where to change chipset voltage?

I have just been doing some voltage testing on my system as i was worried by the readings that i was getting from HW when testing my OC, my 12v rail was showing 12.99!! which is very high indeed so i got myself a mulitmeter and tested my machine at startup and underload and my 12v rail was showing 12.23 and my 3v rail was showing 3.39, so from now on i will never take notice of the voltage reading as they are indeed false, pc probe was showing 12.10 on the 12v rail which was a closer reading, just wanted to share my findings with you all incase anyone comes across a similar woe

Does anyone know the max safe temp I should be aiming for with a Phenom 550 unlocked to 4 cores? It's currently 51c at load however i'm using the stock cooler at the moment - I have an aftermarket arriving tomorrow.

Max temp is 70 (from here) but most people seem to keep it to the low 50s and try to keep out of the high 50s. I think stability becomes patchy on overclocks in the high 50s / low 60s.

Need some help guys im trying to get 3.6GHz 100% stable but im not having much luck atm below is what im runing:

AMD 955 C2
Asus M3A32-MVP Deluxe
4GB DDR2 OCZ 800MHz 4-4-4-15 @ 2.1v

So far i've set the ram timings to the setttings above and upped the multiplier to x18 = 3.6GHz's.
Prime95 keeps failing and so did OCCT, so i've upped the vcore to 1.424 V which dosen't seem to help.

Any ideas ?

What cooler are you using?

What temps you getting at stock at load?

How quickly does prime95 or OCCT crash?

Disabled Cool 'n' QUiet?

Try changing Advanced clock calibration to AUTO? might be worth a try?

Maybe try running RAM as stock to begin with?

I have given up again. Still at 202x18.5 with 1.45vcore. Overvolting chipset made no difference. Oh well. Guess there is something odd about my chip.

I tried to convince myself it was the memory but I dont think so because I had my unlocked 550 running at 201x19 very happily with the rest of the set up the same.

I am off travelling for 6 months at the beginning of June anyway so it does not really matter :D. Reckon AMD will have come up with something even more exciting by december. Maybe I will skip straight to bulldozer if my mobo will allow.

Richy1204 as teddy says what cpu cooler you got and what temps you have ? should do that with that voltage as its a bit over what you need. maybe temps shooting up very quickly and crashing when benching they do shoot up very very quickly without decent cooler

I'm running custom water cooling so temps isn't a real big problem load is under 45*C. Yes Cool 'n' Quiet is disabled
I think it might be the ram I've just set them to stock and prime95 is running ok atm for the last 25mins.

Guys, what are you using to monitor your temps??

On load Speedfan shows temps of 62 degrees on the CPU while core temps are 49.5. Should I be worried?

I thought core temps were meant to be higher than CPU temp or something!

Running at 3.6 ghz @ 1.40v
