AMD® Phenom™ II Overclocking Thread

cant post any results of my titan prism phenom II x6 system still hasnt arrived. They have had problems at OcUK in testing said had problems with throttling and cpu getting too hot and system being unstable and crashing, had to rebuild whole machine so looks like i may be getting it tomorrow :( ordered it monday tired of waiting now just want to see what it can do.

Ive just unlocked the 4th core on my 720BE, but now no cpu temp monitoring programs work. What else can i use? Edit: after a lot of googling there doesnt seem to be a way, dont think i want to run prime without knowing if my cpu is melting. :(

that ones of the setbacks with core unlocking - the temperature probes dont work. however, your motherboard should have a temperature probe on the cpu socket which works (should be called TMPIN0 or TMPIN1).

heres how i read it. I disabled ACC, i noted that the TMPIN1 was always about 5 degrees lower than the CPU readout, so when i reenabled ACC, everytime i look at the temp, i add 5 degrees to it to give me the true value (ish)

Ok, thanks for the tip.

I have come to the conclusion that all this Prime95/IBT/LinX stability testing is utter ********....

Why?....because i have a Phenom II 550 that will unlock to a Triple Core and overclock to 3.85Ghz and run these stress tests and any other thing you throw at it...all day long, utilising 3 cores at 100%.

Completed Resident Evil 5 and Dirt2 which make full use of all 3 cores without a problem....and yet....

I have just installed the latest version of Flash, played a 720p file and....Hard CPU lock up....powered off, retried, same thing....twice more i tried, exactly the same....

Tried different sites, incase they were using old version of Flash, same result.

Reset CMOS, went back to Dual Core 550 mode....tried EXACTLY the same procedure with EXACTLY same video....played it 5 times in full screen and window modes...

No problems......100% stable....no lock up.

Rebooted, unlocked extra cores, played video...

Hard CPU lock, rebooted 3 times, same result...Hard Lock......

These CPU's were sold as a dual core for a reason after all.....if you have an unlocked CPU that seems stable and passed all these stress tests like mine, well the truth is, it probably isnt, you just havent utilised it in the way that will make it lock up yet....and it will probably be different for each batch of 550's or 555's out there....

You miss the point.....

People are using these programmes to determine whether or not they have stable unlocked cores....

Prime95 pass = free stable unlocked cores.

And that conclusion is obvioulsy wrong....

Well it puts 100% stress on all CPU's so it covers stress stability, other problems can occur, but a Prime95 test generally does give you a good idea.

Doesn't prime95 just test for stability and whether or not you can run the cpu at the overclocked speed under stressing conditions? So if it passes these tests then that just tells me that i can run this cpu at this speed but it doesnt take into account of other factors that could cause problems.

I tried 4.0Ghz the other day, infact the day after i got 3.8Ghz stable and got a hard cpu lock up and blue screen of death. Luckily managed to put the multiplier back down to 3.8Ghz and now it runs fine. I used prime85 again for that scenario running just a blend torture test and it locked up after 3 seconds.

Tryed any other programs?

I've tried all of them.....

Infact the following will complete with 4 Cores active.

Fritz BenchMark
3dMark 03,05,06
3dMark Vantage
Cinebench R10
Cinebench R11.5
SuperPi
Unigine Heaven,sanctuary,Tropics

These will all work with 3 Cores active (4cores will hard lock system)

LinX
Intel Burn Test
Prime 95
Sandra Pro
Perfomance Test
Windows Experience Index

Like i said, you can run apps until your blue in the face, but only, as i found out today, some real world usage and weird custom code can still bring down a system that you thought was previoulsy 100% stable...

My hands are tied :( cant think of anything apart from the obvious of resetting but the best of luck :)

use speedfan and temp2 should be your cpu temp, thats what i use with my unlocked 550BE
