AMD R9 290 (Non-X, Pro, etc) Owners Club

Sorry for the silly question: I bought a 290 Vapor-x 4 days ago from Overclockers... when I saw the GTX 970 news today I regretted it and I was thinking about returning my card.

The thing is I already retrieved used the gold reward code... that means I can't return my card anymore?

Well, the 970 seems better overall. 5-10% better performance, cheaper, lower power consumption... and probably smaller :D the Vapor-x is huuuuge

Choose the most expensive games from the never settle/gold radeon ticket and your 290 will be cheaper by at least £45 ;)

But yes, the 970 does look amazing, if it weren't for mantle and freesync, I would be selling my 290 and getting one!

The real world difference between the 290 and 970 will be small and only shown in benchmarks.

A 4GB card with a 256bit bus is so last gen anyway. Or just cost cutting by Nvidia...

My money says an 8GB 512bit 980Ti will be along shortly. Just after everyone has grabbed a 980.

It's the usual for Nvidia....:)

Yea, you're right. I was just a bit ****ed about how quickly the reviews came out right after my purchase

I'll keep my 290. In the end, I'd rather give $$$ to AMD rather than Nvidia :)

Why did you flash the card or did you think it might have had that outcome?

Do you have a link to the BIOS and a guide how to do it? might give it ago as they have dual bios I cant really go wrong.

Just a quick observation I've flashed an ASUS BIOS onto my Tri-X and it's lowered my VRM temps by 10-15c and made my overclock more stable.

Bumping the thread as i never got an answer for this.

Why did you flash your BIOS to the asus one? Where you expecting them results?

If so, which BIOS did you use?

Considering how hot these can get, is it worth getting another MSI Gaming 290 second hand? £150 seems a decent price to future proof my rig for a while longer.
