AMD R9 290 (Non-X, Pro, etc) Owners Club

Hi everyone,

Another latecomer to the party. This is my rig. Dual R290s with Aquacomputer blocks. All fitted into a pedestal desk :) Absolutely silent in normal use and once I have it tuned up it should post some pretty good scores.

Just wanted to say hi because I may be looking for some advice on best safe overclock settings.

Hey guys anyone know of mods (for cooling) that can be done on MSI R9-290 Gaming Editions (non reference pcb).

If possible something like the Arctic (not sure if it fits though), I don't like the H60-H80 mods and would like to avoid that if possible.

Cant think of any Air mod that would give better temps than your should be getting already.

Is it bad temps or noise that are your problem?

Your setup..looks.. errrr interesting!?!

I'll take that as a compliment :) I wanted to build a silent PC with good gaming performance and with it shut away in a cabinet it had to be water-cooled. It was quite a challenge to fit it all together but I am pleased with the results. With the door closed it just looks like a pedestal desk and runs nicely stable and nearly silent.

What are temps like? is that just a 280 rad for 2x290's and a CPU?

Hi Finners,

Extended gaming on Crysis 3 both CPU and GPU temperatures remain about 60 degrees, although I use the Gigabyte software to run the fans at max and this makes it just about audible. This is with a mild overclock on both. There is a second dual-fan radiator that vents the hot air at the rear. The intake comes from the rear at the bottom. A nice side effect of sitting on a carpet means no dust makes it as far as the fans. the wooden cabinet is lined with foam to keep it nice and quiet. Who wants an ordinary PC case sitting in your office anyway :)

Bad temps, I need to undervolt lower clocks and use vsync to run fine in crossfire.

Are you sure it is a temperature issue? These cards are designed to run really hot (up to 95 if I remember correctly). If you have a pair in your rig and they are stable with an undervolt it may be that your PSU or mainboard power to the cards is limiting. What's the wattage on your PSU?

I know you don't want to go AIO route, I tried two AC Xtreme's on 290X CrossFire but the heat dumped into your case is mental.:p

At least one AIO/AC Xtreme would be your best route.

My route taming the 290X's.

1.:

High internal case temps and loud in there!!!

2:

Added another AC Xtreme with a 120 fan strapped to the sides too, it controlled the noise a lot but case fans still need ramped up while internal case temps only dropped slightly.

3.

Kraken+Aio on top

Internal temps dropped a lot but lower speed on case fans still too loud, but if your not anal about noise then it's fine.

All the core air is vented out the back, very quiet with normal case temps, Kraken/G10/AC AIO is the best it's going to get out with a full WC.

I had everything sitting around bar the two Kraken's and one aio

94c to be exact. I was running up to 4 on my AX1200w so no the PSU is fine ;)

I can't stand the heat output in the room even with 2 and the crazy amounts of noise when the fans are trying to keep up.

That's the main reason I undervolted and underclocked (70c max and low fan speed)

Add me to the roll, I had 7x MSI R9-290s at one point :)
