AMD R9 290 (Non-X, Pro, etc) Owners Club

Can I throw a question out for reference R290 owners? What sort of overclocks are you managing and how much extra voltage have you needed to get there?

It seems that some of the overclocks posted by more recent owners of R290s are way in excess of what I can get up to even water-cooled :(

I just run my two at 1030/1250 constantly.

No real need to push them further, though I took them to 1100 for a single benchmark run. Gains simply aren't worth it though.

Thanks, Bonjour. I have mine running at 1050/1250 at the moment and they seem fully stable in benchmarks and games. I have allowed more power in MSI Afterburner, but kept the voltage at stock. I'd be interested to hear if anyone else has managed much more and how much extra voltage was required.

LOL don't have another pci-e slot and movable hd cage? how many mms were you off....I was off by 3mm LOL I was seriously like are you joking.....LOL that's what I get for eyeballing it :D

Gigabyte Windforce 0C from the b-grade section. Very pleased.

Saw? Argh! HSS steel drill bit and drill 'em out! :o

Dremel.

That is all.

I don't have a dremel or anything we can use to remove it, sawing would be the only way but I'm not taking it all apart to protect from bits I'd rather start clean from scratch

I looked online and it said the card was 300mm, I made a paper cutout of the shape of the card and it was like yours about 3mm over the cage. However now it's arrived I can see the card itself is about 300mm but there's what seems like a foot long of orange plastic and copper piping hanging off the end :D

At least it's orange though, I'm happy I can carry on with my themed build now (Y)

In anticipation of GTA V and hopefully overclocking my 290, I would like to look into an AIO cooler. I have an MSI Gaming which you don't need telling runs like the inside of a volcano. From my research, I think I'll get the Corsair HG10 bracket rather than the rival NZXT as the former cools the VRAM. The question is what AIO. I've seen a review of the HG10 with the Corsair H75 producing great results. However spending £100 to cool a graphics card seems a lot, if push comes to shove I don't mind doing it. I wonder if something like the H55 would be suitable? I don't need a 40-50 degree drop in temperature, as long as it's well below 90 degrees under stress. My final question is what fan should I get for the AIO? I have a Corsair AF120 Performance Series knocking about which I believe is suited to cooling radiators? Thanks :)

The H55 is more than adeqoute but the tubes between the pump block and the rad are a bit short. That fan would be fine. Alternatively you could fully water cool your pc? But that is very expensive compared to an aio.

Thanks. I'm definitely not going to water cool the whole PC, I have a Fractal Design R4 and access to a shed load of fans from my mining days but the rest of the PC is fine on air. My PSU is bottom mounted so think that slot is unavailable, however the rear fan slot should be OK (I think) for the short tubes.

I have to do the same if I were to do it, but the tubes do fit to my rear fan, only just though.

Just checking - are you aware the HG10 doesn't come with the fan? It expects you to recycling the fan from your stock 290 heatsink and I don't think either of the fans from the MSI Gaming will fit. It's not clear from the pictures and description but I remember a couple of people mentioning the lack of fan once they'd bought the HG10 and the reviews back this up.

If you've got room for the backplate, the Accelero Hybrid II is excellent on a 290 (mine is silent and maxes out at 70C under the most demanding games at high resolutions, 60C at 1080P). It also seemed to do a surprisingly good job at keeping VRMs cool - I stopped monitoring them once I was happy they weren't going to cook to minimise programs running in the background. Haven't tried any other coolers or AIOs so can't comment on others, I'm afraid.

Can you add me to the Honour Roll :)

Make: Power Colour R9 290(P) Flashed to X

Temps wise during gaming 56'c on Core, VRM1 @ 74'c and VRM2 @ 54'c, X31 is set to performance, the rad has the stock NZXT fan pulling, with a 140 AF pushing, may change out my 2 front Corsair AFs for some Phanteks PH-F140SP I have lying about, but temps are good :) and the HG10 is a lot neater than my old NZXT G10.

Idle temps are:

Core@ 28'c
VRM1@ 25'c
VRM2@ 27'c

Done some reading about the Accelero Hybrid II - looks good but the installation sounds fiddly and I'm worried about VRM temps. I think I will go with the HG10, still deciding about what AIO though.

AIO does not have to be massive, using a X31, however previously had an H55 + Kraken on this card, GPU's really respond well to water cooling.

Fitted separate VRM heat-sinks with the Kraken G10 from Gelid.
