AMD R9 290 (Non-X, Pro, etc) Owners Club

Found myself an Arctic accelero Xtreme III this morning, hope it lives up to the job of cooling my 290(X) vtx3d while being quieter.
The cooler has just cost me £65 delivered and is brand new.

The Xtreme will be quieter/cooler than any AIB custom cooled R9's imo.

Iv'e used 5870/6950/7970/50's under AC Xtremes with supplied heatsinks on the vrms and they all managed vrm temps ok with voltage+high oc's except for the 7970, it needed the big Alpenfon VRM sink as temps got too high-but that requires you to mod the Xtreme(cut part of the heat fins off).

I never tested stock sinks on the 290X vrms, I just went straight for the kill with the BEAST.

Now running my original AC 5870 Xtreme on top of my 290X with Alpenfon VRM sink with BF4 sitting@~57c max@1100/1350 with AB custom fan profile/3 X system fans set on low.:D

The interesting part but more impressive(due to the high core temps in regards to stock blower) is, the 290X core is running cooler than the 7970/50's ever managed.

£49 has now custom cooled 5870/6950/7970/7950's/290X!

Still going strong and silent, that cooler is Legendary.:D

Can't really see much difference between this card and my MSI Gaming GTX 760 OC OC OCCCCCCC'D.

Noise wise though there isn't much difference in them because the MSI Gaming ran near 80%+ Fan speed for cooling it clocks.

I'm not quite convinced why anyone would bother with a 290X over a stock 290, the performance difference per cost is insane, and if they were that bothered about performance they could get a XFIRE of these bad boys crackin'.

I will add the back of my PC is substantially hotter now!

OcuK will let you change the paste without voiding warranty so long as you don't damage the card. I HIGHLY recommend you do it and use a quality paste like Gelid. It makes a nice difference to temps.
 
Also just before I buy this psu matt, I guess the rm850 I was looking at, got great reviews, on sale atm, and is beefy enough to power probs not too much of an oc on the cards, but a higher oc on my cpu if needed. Just so you know, atm my 2700k is at 1.31 volts, what would you recommend as a safe max 24/7 voltage for the 2700k? (on air)

The rm850 seems like a quality psu, and if you can power yours barely on a 750, an 850 should have little problem?

Yeah that should be fine mate. Only at extreme overclocks you may hit problems. 2700K should be fine up to 1.4v.

You can run it at 1.475v at absolute max as long as your temps are in check.
 
PowerColor rolls out custom R9 290


1040MHz, PCS+ cooler

PowerColor has launched what appears to be the fastest non-reference R9 290 card on the market. Although the 290X gets all the fame, we believe Hawaii Pro products offer a slightly better price/performance ratio and with a nice custom cooler they look even more tempting.

The PowerColor Radeon R9 290 PCS+ features a triple-fan PCS+ cooler which is not even in the same league as the reference AMD cooler. Better yet, it features the highest factory overclock of any Hawaii Pro card on the market today. The GPU clock stands at 1040MHz, on par with Gigabyte’s Radeon WindForce 3X, but the memory is clocked at 1350MHz, which is 50MHz to 100MHz faster than factory overclocked R9 290 cards from Sapphire, XFX and Gigabyte.

This bumps the bandwidth up to 346GB/s, which is about 10 percent more than you’d get on a reference card, or even a reference 290X for that matter.

The card does not appear to feature the Battlefield 4 bundle, but then again early listings put it at about €375, which is cheaper than most non-reference cards. Furthermore it ends up about €100 cheaper than the average 290X. Not bad, not bad at all.

I believe not too long ago someone (LittleMatt?) was wondering if using PCI-e 2.0 @ 8x with these cards was causing issues with the XDMA stuff.

I've just done some Heaven runs (probably not the best test, but the easiest thing I can run repeatedly) @ 16x PCI-e 1.1, 2.0 and 3.0.

I wont post screenshots, you'll just have to trust me. These were all run using the setting in Kaapstad's Heaven benchmark thread.

PCI-e 1.1:
FPS: 86.7
Score: 2184
Min FPS: 24.9
Max FPS: 187.4

PCI-e 2.0:
FPS: 88.2
Score: 2221
Min FPS: 25.5
Max FPS: 195.5

PCI-e 3.0:
FPS: 88.9
Score: 2240
Min FPS: 21.1
Max FPS: 198.1

Not quite sure what happened to the min FPS on 3.0, but didn't want to run it again in case a second run skewed the results.
This was done on Win7 using a 3930K @ 4.3GHz running on a R IV E with 2 x Sapphire reference 290s in CF.

Hope that might be of some use to someone.

Thanks. However ive heard the biggest differences come in compute situations. So if you could test the difference using sleeping dogs extra preset, or tomb raider ultimate preset with tressfx and ssaa that would be cool.
