AMD R9 290 (Non-X, Pro, etc) Owners Club

So I bit the bullet and have a vtx 290 incoming in a few days (reference) and I know these references coolers get a bit toasty and loud sometimes. I was wondering what aftermarket air coolers would work well on these cards and not break the bank.
Haven't changed graphics card cooler before so a bit apprehensive about it

I think uksoldierboy got the Raijintek Morpheus and had some great results with it.

That's my setup. I assume switching to an aio water cooler to reduce the warm air being blown about inside wouldn't do anything to help?

One of the problems you have is those fans you have littered throughout your pc. I had the exact same ones. They're useless. I can blow my nose and generate more forceful airflow than those things. Put a filter in front of them and they are completely. useless.

Ah damn. Really liked the look of the white ones. Will check out what else is out there.

Not the fans matt, nothing will help him reduce the temperature. Unless he moves the more apart or water cool.

Remember all my threads I started. The 290 GPUs push a lot of hot air into the case, this isn't just msi but them all. The top card is feeding from bottom and getting more hotter.

Just looking at pics of the r290 reference cooler and noticed that it only has 3 smaller intake ports on the front beside the fan instead of the entire end of the shroud being opened up. Surely this restricts airflow into the fan by a large amount? Reminds me of the 5xxx series which had 2 "snout" like openings at the end of its shroud, aside from the 5850 which had the power connectors actually inside one of the intake ports.

The top fan on the right will be just blowing air straight to the top fan of the case.

I have 140mm Corsair AF fans and run them at 900 Rpm which is quiet but still blows a decent amount of air even with a filter.

Yep same problem I had with my PCS+ cards. The top card ran 15-20C hotter than the bottom after a long session.

Yep hence i said one of the problems. He needs static pressure fans to improve things and or move the gpu's further apart. I guarantee those fans will be doing bugger all though lol.

He'll probably need another case as well then, 540 looks ace but a 360+240 just wont cut it cooling 2 290s, i've got the same case and same chips...barley cools 1 card whilst maintaining quietness :(

Also using same case, nothing wrong with it. It's just the 290's push crazy amount hot air and having them so close is not good enough. 7000 series was fine

Here my 540

Quietness is overrated when you have a gaming headset. :p

:(
Never use mine, don't like it on my head :o
This computer though, is getting broken apart soon, it's too noisy and the fans are 400-500rpm....i can hear the burrrrr noise. If i turn the E-loops off it's fine, but without them on the temps creep up.

God i miss my chiller, no noise - at all! Unit was in another room, no heat being put into my room where i sit was bliss. Last night my room temp was 28c, i like winter...this is horrible :(

I'm anal about a lot of things, but luckily for me fan noise is not one of them. Just as well with lots of GT 1850's and two reference 290's. :p

Gaming in the summers always a pain with hot running cards, usually have to peel myself of my chair and mop the floor :p

It's worse if you sit in a leather chair. The amount of times i have to peel my love spuds off my thigh in this hot weather. :p
