AMD Radeon GFX & DirectX 12

I think this (dx 12/windows 10) and amd's new cards are where they have been spending their entire time and money over the last several months and as a result the current gpu's (more so crossfire users) and windows 7/8/8.1 have suffered, lets just hope it really pays of...

I am in no rush to get a new gpu so can hold of for a bit longer.

Agreed, that's my gut feel too. I'm happy with my 290's so far, so I am hoping to sit out the first gen DX12 cards (as in ground-up DX12 cards, not the current ones that may support some features) and then jump into second or third gen when the hardware's fully sorted and the games start coming through. That said, I reserve the right to change my mind if the first gen DX12 cards are tasty! :D

I'd be more impressed with some drivers/crossfire profiles for the equipment we have now, I have to say the timing of this post is "poor" to say the least.

Unfortunately thats AMD all over right now :( implement tech, harp on how wonderful it is, neglect to support it once new shiney tech has been invented, rinse and repeat ad nauseum.

Shame cos im a bit of an AMD fanboy at heart, but i find myself more and more unable to support them on a daily basis lately :(
 
In all honesty, if DX12 is anywhere near as great as its rumored to be, given those charts a month or so back and that 3D Mark demo etc, that was on current hardware, then anyone with a 290(x) or so right now, coupled with a decent CPU is going to be in a good position for a good while anyhow.

In theory if that unified memory thing is as good as it sounds, 2 x 8gb 290s and a decent i7 or even an 8 core AMD cpu and you will smash through games bells and whistles included i'd imagine
 
DX12 is a stand with multi GPU built in.
So any game engine made for DX12 should have native support for multi GPU.

Thats how I am seeing DX12

Completely untrue.

PCI-E v2 has already been saturated using a single GPU, such as the TitanX/295x2. Several games gain several FPS by using PCI-E V3.

For those running 2, 3 or 4 way SLI/Crossfire, PCI-E V3 is absolutely needed.

Users of 4 way SLI (for example Kaap with 4xTitanX) already report the PCI-E V3 bus struggling to keep up with the cards.

PCI-E V4 will be here next year anyway, so np :) (Intel Skylake-E has it).
 
Does this "combined memory pool" thingy mean "two 4GB cards will always have 8Gb available to them in DX12 games", or does it mean "two 4Gb cards will sometimes have 8Gb available to them, depending on whether the programmers have jumped through hoops for it to happen, but really expect nothing to change significantly until DX15"?

I'd like to know this too.

This technology sounds absolutely amazing, though it's going to be completely useless if only 1-2 games every 5 years actually take the time to implement it in their DX12 games.

Hopefully this will be implemented automatically, so if a game uses DX12 - then this combined memory pool is active in all it's glory. Though I'd be extremely surprised (and happpy!) if this were to be true.

This is a completely uneducated guess but I would suspect it would only be in certain scenarios and would take a lot of effort to get it work and would not be a "default" feature as such.

Like I said just my poor guesswork!
