AMD Radeon R9 290X with Hawaii GPU pictured, has 512-bit 4GB Memory

The 280X actually replaces the 7950 believe it or not. However it has the stream processors, compute units etc of the 7970. Dave Baumann from AMD confirmed as much. That's why its so cheap. You can get the 280X for £230. At pure reference its 50 mhz slower than 7970 ghz. However most 280X cards come clocked at 7970 ghz clocks 1050 mhz or higher for £250.

It's a 7970 rebadge, at 7970 prices.
That's all that matters.

On OCUK, the cheapest R280X is the same as the cheapest 7970.

You can get a 7950 at 270x prices (Except for the 155 quid ones, but then you can get the 7870 at 143 quid)
So how can the 270x be a price/performance champion?

The problem is, review sites probably will be pressured into not taking into effect the current prices, or it's not going to look good.

The 7XXX are better buys as it stands, and the R's represent less price/performance (Or equal for the 7970)
And there's still no price/performance replacement to the 7950, so the R280X replacing it is kinda moot.

I agree. The 280X is replacing both the 7950 and the 7970 but its coming in at previous 7950 price. Obviously this is before the mad price drops on the 7950 a month or two back which saw them drop below £215. Obviously trying to clear old stock to make way for the new cards. Its just a shame that the new cards are basically the same. :D

Its going to be interesting to see if there's a big gap in pricing between the 280X and the 290.

Corrr Matt, you've been having a mare over the last 2 pages ain't you? :D

I was actually correct but Dave's typo threw me for a second. I had to read more of the thread to confirm it.

Yeah, it's launched at old 7950 pricing.
The problem is, we're living in a world where we've had GTX680's for like 220, and 670's for 160 quid.

7950's for 170, and 7970's for 220.

This wasn't that long ago either.

So far, AMD's RXXX doesn't make any sense for consumers, as it's worse than prior deals.

It's brought some fancy new boxes and coolers and that's about it.

And then it looks like we're set to have the 7950's tier replacement cost over 400 quid (Which is ridiculous for a second tier product, I mean when the 7950 launched at 360+ it was stupid, but this is worse) and then the 7970's tier replacement costing over 500 quid.

The R290 and 290X will probably offer really good performance, but the rumoured pricing is depressing.

But then it's not like there's a choice, because Nvidia are just as bad (and worse)

Like I said months ago, I'll get the lube.

That's how AMD and Nvidia fleece us. :)

I've been wanting more single GPU performance for ages.

But it doesn't look like I'll get it.

Outside chance of 290 at £350-£400? It could happen because to have a gap of £200 for 280X @£250 to £450 for 290 seems a bit much. I agree its unlikely but still.

Yep get some for me as well. :( I'm reasonably happy with what ive got, for now. :p

Aye it's bad. Unfortunately the market still looks willing enough at these price points. Until someone either comes in with unprecedented levels of altruism and shakes it up by forgoing profit... or the market rejects, there's going to bumps in lube price before GPU prices drop. Especially with all the lubing occurring.

290 at 350, is something I'd go for, but right now, that's still quite a loss on the 7970 to go to second tier.

By the time 20nm comes around and prices aren't ridiculous, you'll probably get near close to double the 290 at that 200 quid :p

People are always willing to buy (Looks at sig)

So it's not going to change.

Precisely. I convinced myself that £500 was decent value. Which it was a few months ago in the market place of 780s only. However, back in the real world it's poor VFM.

Not that you've said otherwise of course but it is my own disposable income and luckily I can spend it how I please. I wouldn't turn down the chance of it being cheaper but critically I'm willing to pay the price tag and I feel it is "worth it". I think people like me are a large part of the problem but what can you do? :)

There's nothing that can be done.

I have the money, I just can't justify it to myself, so even though I'd jump at a 780 or R290X, the price isn't what I deem acceptable.

And like you say, it's your money, you can do what you want with it.
