Tbh, I doubt that most of the non-reference coolers are going to offer much more than roughly a 10°C drop with a lot less noise. Perhaps something like the Toxic cooler may do better though.
You really want aftermarket air or preferably water with this one if you want to do some reasonable clocking without the noise/heat penalty IMO. (Yep, stating the obvious FTW!)

Once again, for those that missed it (and because A) Some of you may not know what you're letting yourself in for, and B) I find it hilarious :p):

Speaking of nothing new...

Hope you've got waterblocks on pre-order too :p

I know for a fact than an MSI Lightning R290X will do 1300ish on the stock cooler, put that under water and your closing onto 1400MHz

Considering that doesn't exist yet, how would you know that for a fact? :)
Then again, god knows what you've got stashed away :D

Haha!

I remember my 4870 sounded like a jet when set to 100%, actually so did my 2900xt :p

Most reference coolers do tbf, both my reference 7970's did (reason I went H2O), my 5870's did, my 1900XTX most definetly did, but easily the worst I ever experienced was my GeForce FX5800 Ultra. Jesus that thing was ridiculous. Good enough performance for its day, but the cooler was laughable. Think it was nicknamed the Dustbuster FX or something.

I do wonder the resale value of Titan now that these have released: people could sell a titan and get a 290x; or two if Titan has held its value. :p

It's plummeted, nobody will want to buy one at the £600+ they've been selling on the MM.

780's not so bad but still a hit especially on reference designs.

I've had my Titan's since Feb. I'd imagine a lot of people have had too. Seeing this card perform on par arse end of the same year is not something I'd really lose any sleep over. Nor has it made me want to sell up shop just to get 290Xs.

In a buyers market the Titan doesn't make sense now, but for the people that have had months of stonking performance out of them already it's not really a big deal. This is the computer industry, if you found it amazing every time an expensive GPU was superseded you'd have to suffer from some form of long term memory problem. I promise you also that I could happily sell mine at £600 on the bay ;)

At the most popular resolution still used today (1080p) the difference is miniscule.

It does well and truly beat it at 4k but by the time that resolution becomes the norm there'll be plenty of cards for it.

Info...

The 290X at 55% sounds like my 7950 Ice-Q's at their higher speed settings. Not that bad tbh once inside a case.

At 100%, jet engine. Oh yeah, i remember that reference cooler now! :D

So ya, found out why these fans are locked to 55% max:

Pretty loud. If you don't game with head set that can be bothersome. However at uber 55% was no louder than my 690 at full load.

They're not capped. The two onboard BIOS 'quite' is capped 40% and Uber at 50%.

You can raise the threshold fan control with AMD Overdrive. It will reach max set fan speed by the time it hits 95c. It will dynamically lower core clock once it hits the temp threshold set. From what I read as temps go down the fan will auto adjust lower as well. You can even raise the temp threshold as 95c is suggested as comfortable. Not sure on temp limit though and how much she can really take.

My point wasn't a slight against Titan owners, just a simple response to the guys question on resale value.

I fully appreciate wanting to have the best performance you can afford when it's available. Hence why I went for a 780 a couple of months back instead of waiting for the new 290's

Sorry was more aimed at the other comments and stating outright, yours was the last post that's all :D.

Pretty dumb thing to post as the 290X does not even match a 780 at the resolutions we generally use

Keep seeing people referring to a single same review for showing 290x doesn't match GTX780 against all other reviewers out there...
Lol i can see that Linus review becoming popular now as a counter to every other review out there. :D
I like his videos in general, but can't say his graphic card reviews are always reliable.

I recall he concluded the GTX660Ti being faster than the 7950 in one of his reviews...
