AMD Radeon R9 290X with Hawaii GPU pictured, has 512-bit 4GB Memory

Unless they're overclocked on the same cooler, it can't be compared really.

Why? Unless the card is throttling then it makes no difference. Most of his reviews are average overclock vs average overclock, the biggest difference in the coming months will be potential driver improvements from AMD.

The 290X reference cooler is clearly holding it back, hence the high temp/noise. One comparison of an overclock is not much use really anyway, especially when using a cheap cooler.

To quote a rusty. Fag paper between them at 1080p. 290X pulls clear at 1440p or higher, but its still close. At 4k the 290x is clearly faster than 780/titan.

I'm sounding like a broken record, but the driver thing is very important :) Launch vs tuned mature drivers means AMD's results are at their worst possible now.

True. 99% of reviews say the 290X is faster than the 780/titan overall and much cheaper. Only cherry picked reviews or benchmarks will show otherwise. The 780/Titan also offer other benefits which have been well documented but on pure performance the 290X is now the fastest. The 290X will get faster as well as drivers mature and overclocking becomes possible.

Is the 290X better than the 780 @1080p? Reviews are mixed.

Yes.
however at that resolution you be hard pressed to notice any difference with any card (780/titan/290x/290) when you game. I personally would view this vs the 770/280x at that resolution.
for an average user at 1080p a 770/280x is the choice really.
2560x and up that is when the difference starts to get noticeable.

Nice damage control.

Every review says it's to hot, power hungry, high stock performance but beaten by overclocked Nvidia cards whilst running cooler and quieter.

This is FX 9590 VS 3930K all over again.. These cards will tumble in price if Nvidia re adjust their pricing.

Non reference cards may make the 290X's look a lot better, but comparing ref 290X to any GTX 780 and AMD lose in almost every metric except out of the box performance..

Yup. At the moment there's nothing between a 290X and 780 at 1080p, but the 290X only has improvements to come while the 780 is already at its peak. So even at its worst as it is now, the 290X is at least as good as a 780 at 1080p, and notably better at higher resolutions.

The 780 is not at its peak, the WHQL's released the other day added good % for some games and upped a few peoples synthetic bench scores.
