What kind of rad setup would you need to watercool 3 of these? 285c combined max load
They wanted to hit that magical price point that undercuts the Nvidia card by a good amount, I guess the cooler had to be sacrificed to do so.
They basically done what Nvidia did to the with the cheaply made 680, this caused 7970 prices to tumble, hopefully it will have the same affect on Nvidia and lower prices all round.
Not to burst peoples bubbles but is it just me or is anyone else thinking that water cooling is a must for these reference 290X's? Those temps alone do put me off (and I know AMD have stated this is within the cards working parameters) but the noise is a no no.
Custom cooled cards for the noise and heat conscious among us and reference for those who don't care about heat and noise because they are water cooling.

Id love to know what happened to the supposed talk of companies submitting versions of coolers and the best design became the stock cooler for this card. This is basically the same AMD cooler all over again with a facelift on the front. They really need to improve their cooling, its been an issue for ages now and its something that needs to be addressed.

I agree as with a decent stock cooler there would be no debate to whether the r9 290x is a better card than the gtx780. When releasing a card they should be aiming for no bad press what so ever and with this cooler it gives reviewer's all the ammo they need to put a little downer on something that is otherwise great compared to the competition.
Yeah water cooling and up rated PWM.
You don't see AMD reference cards for long though, they're mostly aimed at reviewers, benchers and people who want to dump the cooler to put them under water (or people who don't care about noise/heat). The 7970 was the same, all the launch reviews complain about heat and noise, while the custom cards removed the problem entirely.
Yea it's just the negative publicity they could be doing without though. Imo they would definitely sell more cards without it.
It's won top awards all over the place despite that - people who care about temps or noise will be waiting for the custom cooled cards anyway.
This is one noisy bugger:
65.4dBA with fan at 100%. Headphones are a must.

There is no reason to ever run anything close to 100% on the fan, outside of someone going for a max 3d mark score the gain in cooling and overclocking from 40-50% on the fan to 100% is almost nothing and never remotely close to worth it. What the fan can be set to and what it will hit under normal usage aren't at all connected.
