AMD Radeon R9 295X2 Owners Thread

i was thinking of putting mine in my Lian Li PC-Q08 eventually, but not sure i can squeeze it in, it defo wont fit in my Q01b :)

So it's in my 650D whilst I do some benching runs, how are people finding overclocking them? I have a msi 295x2, currently at +50%power, 1105/1415.

Anything over that gives artifacts, is it worth giving it some extra volts for benching runs, what's safe(ish)?

Matt, thanks for the AB settings. I like to run the 295x2 at 1040/1025 to match the 290x, do you think it'll be alright with these settings?

Also, can I apply same voltage/limit settings to the 290x?

Thanks for all your help.

I have benched mine at 1100/1650 with about +10mv I think but it was only any good for benching as it would start to throttle quite quickly at those settings when gaming.

It's already in ;)

But yeah, it's totally unrealistic, but mainly due to space for fans not becuase it's an oven.

I can't get the CPU to cool properly so I'm going to have to move my rig out into my old Lian Li QC-25, which is still very small just not M1 small!!

ahhh yeah i remember seeing that one!

mm not sure if undervolting would help you there really tbh. Ideally you'd want a case that has enough room for push&pull. i was able to get temps around 63-66 going that route, that was with low rpm corsair sp fans and undervolting

Sounds like your setup is getting too hot and the vram is causing the cards to throttle. Once I turned some of the settings down both the GPU and vram stopped overheating for me - nothing else has pushed it this hard before! I suspect there are one or two features that cause more heat than most, but I must have turned these down (I read somewhere that ambient occlusion can cause a lot of heat?).

Not hugely happy with AA at the moment, FXAA reduces image quality too much for me and MXAA x2 just isn't enough, but I have no more fps available to push it anymore.

I seem to have the game as smooth as I can get it now. On foot it is great, driving it can stutter very slightly, but it is an acceptable trade off against graphics quality.

It is worth reading around the graphic tweak guides for GTAV, quite a few of the features are reported to have little to no fps impact.

Im pretty sure there is something wrong with the drivers.
The gpus are cooled with full cover waterblocks. Also watch dogs is even worse than gtav. Gpu3 is the 290x

Try it and see. I suspect -50 might be a bit of a stretch on the 295x2 with 1040Mhz though.

My trifire setup 295x2+290x while playing gta v does not keep stable gpu core clocks.
For the first few minutes they are stable, and then they start bouncing around.
No vrm or gpu cores throttling.
I have seen other users having the same problem.
Has anyone found a way to solve this?

Funnily enough, I've just started having the same problem. Thing is, things were working fine a few days back. Trying to think of what could've changed. As far as I'm aware, the only thing that's changed is i installed around 20 Windows Updates yesterday. I'm currently finding all my gpu's throttling in a variety of different games and benchmarks like Unigine Valley and Heaven.

They shouldn't be overheating as easily then. Interestingly, watch dogs is also hard on vram...

You are absolutely right. My gpus never throttle while playing games that dont use a lot of vram and lowering settings hard on vram in watch dogs and gta v eliminated the throttling.
But as AMDMatt mentioned this problem started a few days ago. I used play watch dogs with ultra textures without an issue. Now it is impossible. It starts throttling during loading even before I start to game.

So it does not occur on other games?

No only on watch dogs and gta v and only if my combined vram usage is greater than 10GB out of 12Gb.
In these 2 games when this happens, lower loads cause greater throttling
It also does not occur on lords of the fallen ultra textures and shadow of mordor using settings that exceed 10Gb.
Also all benchmarks 3dmark, valley etc run without any throttling

Hi everyone,

i'm currently thinking about getting an R9 295x2. However, i'm not too sure if it's a good idea. For the last 2 years i've been a GTX680 owner. However, since The Witcher 3 is coming up (+ GTA V), i'm thinking about upgrading my rig.
I currently have a 700w PSU, but i'm going to upgrade it for Super Flower 1200w 80+ gold. I also have a HAF 932 Advanced and an i5 3570k (4.2Ghz). So my question is : Will my system bottleneck the GPU ? Is my case "enough" to host the GPU ? It's listed that the card has 8GB, but since it's a crossfire, i think it's only 4 "usuable" GB of VRAM, right ?

BTW, i'd love to know what FPS do you get in GTA V at 1080p ? (I won't have my 1440p monitor for a month :/).

Thanks!
P.S: Since english is not my main language, i apologise in advance for the mistake that i've made !

At 1080p, pretty much any cpu wont give you very good scaling.Of source there are games where you can use ssaa or vsr but then you are not rendering at 1080p. You are right about the useable vram.
GTA V when driving really fast is stuck at about 45fps, no matter the settings for me. While running and indoor Im over 100fps

Funny you should mention that. I just came to this thread to ask about GTA V performance because I'm getting drops to 45fps-ish at 1440p and couldn't tell if it was stutter as new content was loading in, or a GPU thing. What CPU have you got? Mine's a 3570K @ 4.6GHz so I was hoping that wouldn't be a bottleneck, and the disk shouldn't be as it's an SSD.

AMDMatt, if you don't mind me asking, am I holding back my 295X2 somehow, or just expecting too much? Drops to 45fps is hardly a disaster, but I would like to know the game is running how it should. Game settings are all maxed at 1440p, apart from anti-aliasing which is FXAA, reflection MSAA (off) and extended distance scaling (off) and extended shadow draw distance (off).

I run an [email protected], 1080p or 1440p seems to make no difference while driving fast.

I run a 4770k at 4.6ghz and will often get drops into the 30s in busy scenes while driving (I usually get anywhere between 60-90+fps, so quite a difference). Sometimes the drops will seemingly come out of nowhere. Turning down distance scaling helps a lot, but i like it on at least 50%. Everything else on very high with msaa x2.

So, should I get the r9 295x2 or not? I'll be playing at 1080p so a bit then probably switch to my 1440p monitor
will I see an fps gain switching from a Gtx 680 to the r9 or am I better with getting a gtx 980 or 970? (money is not a problem)

I've had both the 295x2 and the 290x at these -50/50% settings since you recommended them, and with all GPUs at 290x speeds (1040/1025) and it's been stable AND less 4-5 degrees running.

So I can confirm it's all fine :)

I haven't had any issues with random clock fluctuations yet, even though I've installed all windows updates etc. I hope I don't get it damn it :D
