AMD Radeon R9 295X2 Owners Thread

How are you all getting on with GTAV? What kind of settings are you managing to run it with?

Pretty much maxed out, at a near stable 60 fps (haven't tried reducing anything to get a rock solid 60 fps as it runs pretty darn well).

What res? I am at 1440p and have dialled a few things back from ultra to very high and msaa to x2. FPS go anything from 30 to 100+ depending on the scene. With everything maxed out my vram seems to overheat. Happy with my settings now though :)

Edit: they look similar to yours actually.

2560x1440 as in the first screenshot :D

Switching from MSAAx4 originally to FXAA made the framerate a bit more consistent, fewer drops to ~58fps. Would probably require more drastic reductions (such as for grass, perhaps) to get rid of the occasional bigger frame rate drops, but they haven't bothered me enough as they are quite infrequent :)

My trifire setup 295x2+290x while playing gta v does not keep stable gpu core clocks.
For the first few minutes they are stable, and then they start bouncing around.
No vrm or gpu cores throttling.
I have seen other users having the same problem.
Has anyone found a way to solve this?

How is 295x2 for someone prioritizing 144Hz over resolution (1080p)? I know it's nowhere near an overkill computing-power wise but how do the current drivers handle fast framerates at such a low-ish resolution? Smooth sailing?

Looking for a temporary single-card solution and at the current prices, 295x2 seems interesting.

Nice case Matt. I have the Level10 GT which I adore, but the 290x is too close to the PSU which I think adds to the problem.

Also I need to sort out cable management.....

@oiko for me the cards were overheating. The game really utilises them. Use afterburner to see if the 295x2 is reaching the 75 degree mark, it'll throttle.

I solved if by keeping my case open until I tidy up airflow.

@CaptainRAVE now that I've sorted out heat, 4K with almost all maxed out (except grass and no advanced features off, no MSAA, using morph AA) is a fantastic solid 60 FPS vsync.

Kudos to R* and ATi (yes, I refuse to change name!) for such great optimisation.

Sounds like your setup is getting too hot and the vram is causing the cards to throttle. Once I turned some of the settings down both the GPU and vram stopped overheating for me - nothing else has pushed it this hard before! I suspect there are one or two features that cause more heat than most, but I must have turned these down (I read somewhere that ambient occlusion can cause a lot of heat?).

Not hugely happy with AA at the moment, FXAA reduces image quality too much for me and MXAA x2 just isn't enough, but I have no more fps available to push it anymore.

I seem to have the game as smooth as I can get it now. On foot it is great, driving it can stutter very slightly, but it is an acceptable trade off against graphics quality.

It is worth reading around the graphic tweak guides for GTAV, quite a few of the features are reported to have little to no fps impact.

Recommended for 295x2 users, try the settings below in Afterburner. Helps keeps temps lower, which should reduce throttling.

There are three types of throttling to be aware of, it's important to know which one you're suffering from. MY Crossfire guide linked 'How To Make Sure Crossfire Is Working Correctly?', will help you discover which one you're suffering from by enabling an overlay.

1. Core throttling. This occurs when the temp hits 74c, the core clock will drop from 1018mhz to 9xx and fluctuate between these clocks. This can be solved by using the afterburner settings above, or by adding another fan to the rad.

2. VRM throttling. Much worse than core throttling, this will outright kick the card into 2D clock mode, 300/150. This can be solved by improving case airflow. Think about rad positioning, if you have the 295x2 dumping rad heat in the case, make it exhaust instead.

3. Powertune throttling. This can occur when the game is not under particular heavy load. Powertune gets tricked into thinking it can supply enough speed without having to run at maximum clocks. Things that can cause this, running low settings and then using Vsync and or an fps cap. Altering settings in game, Vsync, MSAA etc. You need to restart the game to cure it if this happens, thankfully it's rare. Best solution for this is to just increase the settings a little to make the gpu work harder.

I manage -50mV with +50% and a core clock of 1025Mhz and a memory clock of 1625Mhz. Haven't noticed any throttling with my current settings in GTAV (yet!). Everything turned up to very high and sliders maxed out with x2 msaa. Not happy with aliasing at the moment and I get a little stutter while driving (depending on the scene), but at least there is no throttling. Everything maxed out at ultra causes the card to throttle almost immediately, would love to work out which setting is causing this. I might have a play around with the settings when I get time.

Thanks for that, mine will be going in an ITX build this weekend so was looking to undervolt it, although I should be good as I can get push pull set up on the rad as an exhaust.
