AMD Radeon R9 295X2 Owners Thread

TBH, I'm more interested in OCUK's testing process. As they've sent me a replacement, I took the view that implied there was a fault with the original. Do they automatically send replacement stock before they testing returns?

I wouldn't of thought a replacement card/product would be tested.

No, what I mean is surely they would test the returned item before deciding whether to send out a replacement or original? If they send out a replacement it implies that they have also seen a fault with the original. Given that the fault is exactly the same on this replacement then the issue is more than likely with my psu, in which case the original that was returned to OCUK must have passed testing.

If you RMA'ed it, it will say on the invoice if replaced or no fault found.

i can say with 100% confidence that MY HX1000 could not power the 295x2.

shame because I love that power supply. :(

Aha! You had a similar problem? Can I just double confirm that you have tried a Radeon R9 295x2 with the Corsair HX1000 and found that it doesn't power the card? What symptoms did you see?

There are many threads about the HX1000W, some dated back in May this year with someone who had issues with the 295X2.

That is the spec of the HX1000W.

You need to make sure (and I mean absolute sure) the cables that you connect to the card are from the two different rails. And still pray that it will work.

Is not the typical single rail design where any cable will go and the power will be supplied.

After all is 6 years old PSU.
Back in 2008 we needed around 18A max for cards that were using around 230W (4870 and GTX280 comes to mind) while mainstream was the 9800GTX which had 12A and 140W or something close to that.

The 295X2 needs 40A and 500W. And if Gibbo says a 6 year old dual rail is not enough, I will take his word. I have a Corsair 700W and I could have easily plug the 295X2. But was dual rail and I knew that going to have problems with it. Hence I bought a Superflower 1000W.

Hope my evga supernova 1k can handle it.

i did order a SuperFlower 1200w but after deciding that i want to put the 295x2 and my 2x290x's in the same rig (yes just because I can) I decided to order the Corsair AX1500i as well. I will use the SF1200 in my other rig once I disable those ruddy lights!

I really couldnt decide between the EVGA 1600 and the Corsair but I have had experience with Corsairs RMA service and found it excellent and that swung the vote.

it must be the internal power config of the card because the HX1000 powered my 2x290X's without issue. But the 295x2 wouldnt even post. Fan would spin etc but thats about it.

popped it on the superflower and it worked without issue.

Panos, thanks for your reply. I'm happy to concede it is time to replace my ageing and dearly beloved PSU. I'm contemplating a 'Be Quiet! 1000W Powerzone 80 Plus Bronze' as a replacement. That should be ok, right?

Yeah, I also ran 2 x R9 290x cards off mine without issue. Thankyou very much for the response, it's been really helpful!
:)

I wouldn't go for one of those, a bit of an unknown, and bronze isn't all that great.

Some Superflower reviews:
Superflower 1000 platinum: http://www.jonnyguru.com/modules.php?name=NDReviews&op=Story&reid=340
Superflower 1300 bronze: http://www.jonnyguru.com/modules.php?name=NDReviews&op=Story&reid=367

Read at least one of those (or any other of his Superflower Leadex reviews) and I think you'll have made up your own mind. :)

Hi. yeah I had to give up my 750W Corsair also :(

I do not know that brand (Be Quiet). So could be anything unfortunately.

However depending what is the rest of your items any Superflower 850W and above it will do. (if you do not plan to run tri-fire).

I would have said buy the Superflower 1000W gold (£140), because is really good and same as I got, however is not in stock.
Next one up is at @150 the 1000W Platinum or the 1300W Gold!!

However if you are on strict budget, if I was you I would have bought this

As least we know it will work since is gives [email protected].

But just in case, raise a question to OCUK for Gibbo tomorrow morning early, make an order and see if you can have it for Friday.

Alternative options that I do not know, but others can give us some light are

yea it's what i use for the 7990, it's flipping brilliant and way better than my Corsair 750...... my Corsair blew instantly when connected to the 7990.....that psu is worst than my old OCZ, i got quite upset with Overclockers about it.

the Be Quiet is pure quality, just like their coolers..........dead silent, heavy and well constructed...........but the corsair has better cables, Be-Quiet's are stiff and heavy, very hard to bend around tight angles

My Corsair HX750W was fantastic. Never had any problems with it. Was sad to see it go, although it might have a future yet, I have an i7950 + 2x7970s lying around.

TBH, the HX1000W has been superb for me so far. It will be a shame to see it go, but I realised this morning I've had it for at least six years, so it has more than served me well. Money isn't really an issue so I'll get as high a quality psu as I can.
