AMD Radeon R9 295X2 Owners Thread

After some more tweaking/trial and error I have got my card to run at 1190 core 1650 memory in valley. To get it to work I had to un-sync the cards, so I could run the first at 45mv and the second at 70mv. Otherwise running both at 70mv would cause the system to hang due to too much power draw I believe.

Well Watchdogs is definitely more playable.

Still saw drops to 40fps though, and GPU usage wasn't great. Noticed 65% and 18% at one point!

Hence it's probably still better to disable Crossfire for that particular game.

How do you unsync the cards? I have Disabled UPLS if that is the case only.

I was gonna try those Silverstone fan rjkoneill has been on about. The ones that look a bit like Gentle Typhoons.

I could run them off a fan controller, but I'd like the 295x2 to be able to control the speed.

The SST-FN12? that one has only 0.91mm H2O.

The 295X2 gives full power to the stock fan rad all the time, it doesn't throttle it. Hence my big cheering that keeps the system quiet regardless if idle or under load. :)

No, the SST-FQ121 FQ Series 1225

Out of interest, what static pressure does the stock fan have?
So it run it at full speed all the time? Not sure how that's quiet unless full speed is < 1000rpm.

Panos, go into settings of Msi afterburner, I think it's the first check box "Synchronise clocks..." just allows you to set core, memory, voltage differently on each card.

Don't know if I've been added to any owners list but I'm going to have to ask to be removed from the owners club :(

I've sent my card back because the draw of the 980s was just too strong.
I couldn't help it they were shiny and new...
Also I thought I had got it for a limited time, never to be repeated special price of ~£700. Now I see them constantly on This Week Only for even less than I paid. Just irked me a bit.
(Plus if I ever get around to watercooling 3 identical cards will be easier than a 295x2 and 290X)

Exactly, then a week later there standard price was £719.99.. Pretty harsh in any aspect.

Have to say I was not impressed thinking you are saving £300 on the rrp price to find out we could have waited 6 days for the new nvidia gpus to be shown and then of bout the 295 for £20 more then the promotion.

If I had know the case I would have goen with 3x 970's or 2 980s since I had to buy a new psu for the 295 :(

All I can say is lesson learned I wont buy a special offer when new is out with in a few weeks

Cannot comprehend that we are here discussing this.

Guys, how can you compare 2 card solution, with all the noise, and air flow considerations, compared to a single card, with only requirement been that needs the rad properly placed with cold air blowing at it?

Also the 970/980 came out just a week after most got the 295X2s. Surely if you wanted you could have returned the 295, for a small fee if used it, and get 2 970s.

However yes, indeed not even myself is happy with the new pricing of the 295X2. But the MSI is only £30 from the Sapphire one. And I would rather go with the Sapphire warranty at the end of the day, since they support custom watercooling, and doesn't void the warranty.

I have returned my 295x2. When you say small fee, if used it could come to £40 insured postage and £140 deduction for being used. £180 is a big chunk of £700 in my opinion.

Also, I believe MSI, when bought through OcUK, will allow cooler removal.

Another factor for me with the 295x2 was the length of the card. For a start it's so long I've little doubt it would droop and secondly, in the future if I transferred it to my 540 AIR I don't think there'd be enough room to fit a decent thickness rad to the front. On top of which as the connectors don't line up watercooling it along with a 290X would be awkward.

But it wasn't an easy choice and I spent days mulling it over, changing my mind repeatedly. I may yet regret my decision, although the way things are going in a week or 2 the 295x2s will be about £200 so I could pick up another.

If they dropped to the 400 or so mark id be sorely tempted to snag a second for a monster 4k rig even though id need a new psu :D

Mine still in its box, still cant decide what to do . Though i did already get an rma number, i guess if postage was £5 i would already have sent it.
Im never very good with decisions :(

I'm exactly the same!
I waited 13 of the 14 days before I got my RMA number.
Postage could be < £10 if you didn't want to insure it.

I don't think it was entirely the cards fault that I sent it back in the end. The fact that right after that deal the XFX 290X cards were selling for £270 made me tempted to send back and get them, but I didn't (may have needed a new PSU). Then the Nvidia 900 series came out and finally the price of the 295x2s dropped to £700 or less.
The price drop and Nvidia 900 series made me worry about resale value and interest on the 295x2.
Also, while I'm not a big overclocker the reports that the 295x2 is quite limited put me off a bit too.

If I hadn't planned to watercool the 295x2 (and 290X I bought to go with it) then I might have stuck with them. The 295x2 doesn't seem that bad efficiency wise either, 375W isn't bad for what it is. The 290X wasn't so good.

EDIT:
The other thing for me was, if I wasn't sure about it, then I felt it best to send it back. Otherwise it would just eat at me. I felt if I really wanted it I wouldn't have such a hard time deciding would I?

What would you do if you did send it back?
Keep your current card(s)? Would you feel happy doing that?
Buy something else? Is there something you want?

If you pay circa £280 for a 970 , how much could you really lose on resale.
295X2 has far more chance of either being returned by purchaser or not making a reasonable return. Resale has some importance as i like to chance my cards yearly :)

Me too! :)

I rarely get around to selling my old stuff and tend to stockpile anything I can't sell to friends, but my intention is always to sell it!

Anyway, I can't make you mind up for you I have enough trouble making my own decisions!
Hopefully some of the point and questions I raised will help you decide one way or the other. I hope you're happy with whichever decision you manage to reach, when you do! :)

aye , infact i just had a garage clear out and i think ill break close to 1K on ebay crazy really. Im currently at 1600p and i am unlikely to change my monitor until we get 16:10 UHD displays, well maybe one day. Though i cant remember the last time i had a nvidia card, anyway my mind is made up.
