AMD RX 480 Fails PCI-E Specification

Im not defending the power issue, but i find i change cases fairly often, ive had 4 different cases in the last 3 years, and none of them have ever looked anything like that..

That case has been butchered, the inside is horrendous with all sorts of dust and hair and other stuff and yeah it looks like the components are in a bad shape...

If i was AMD i'd want to take a good look at that mobo in its current state to ascertain what caused the issue.

AMD should be fairly easily able to reproduce whether the socket draw can cause actual damage to a budget/skimped parts motherboard in the lab in which case the condition of the board in that particular case should be relatively easy to ascertain if it was relevant or not.
 
That pic has got to be a troll post right? Look at the state of the system. Why do people mess their mb up like that:confused:

I suspect the pc/mb is just being used here to try and extract a freebie from AMD . The mb was probably already dead before the 480 ever got in there.

None of this changes the fact that people are hating on anyone who even dare hint that there may be an issue with an AMD card, but I guess AMD issuing a quick turnaround fix is just a coincident.

As mentioned all fanbois are pathetic.
 
I have seen mission critical MB in much worse states than than... However a good going over with a can of air duster and a paint brush would not go a miss...

If I am wrong on this then I am truly sad for the people this has affected and a little for AMD. Not much though. Both companies should realise now that they absolutely can not try to pull the wool over the eyes of this community as it is full of utter geeks and they will dissect their products.

However I still think that it is a storm in a tea and will blow over unless.... They produce drivers that Nurf the performance. Then they need all the kickings they will inevitably get.

Dusting on it's own isn't enough where liquid is involved especially if it was sugary. I mentioned coke as it's corrosive nature is pretty well documented.

It's pretty easy to clean with some Isopropanol, PCB's are pretty robust and so long as they didn't suffer a short initially they can be washed and cleaned. You must ensure they are 100% dry before feeding them power again though.

I'm currently typing on a Quickfire TK that was completely drowned in sugary Tea whilst powered on. I unplugged it and immediately washed it with water then once dried washed again with Isopropanol. The result is a 100% working keyboard, all keys and leds work fine. No stickiness either. :D
 
This was supposed to be a card for casuals to bung in and "just work". All we heard for months was TAM TAM TAM. It was also touted as the next great OCing champion. Casuals have dust in their PCs.

Dust can be an understatement. I recently took an old work workstation from my parents and refurbished it for a friend as their first gaming system.

I saw a monster when I opened it up. I spent over 3 hours cleaning it out and that photo was half way through the cleaning, had to disassemble it all, and the back and front fans, along with the PSU had around 1cm thick dust blocking everything.

AMD needing to release a 'fix' for this 'issue' (their words not mine) should put to rest whether or not this is a problem. AMD fans need to stop being so emotional and defensive and stick to the facts. Although it's a minor issue that seems to be inconsequential for most users, it needed to be fixed nonetheless.

Dust is one thing and not really much to worry about unless its blocking airflow heat sink ect
but spills are the worrying part here mainly sugar is the one to watch

but hairs can be an issue too... lets say he plugged in the new 480 and hairs where in the way as he pushed down into slot then the hair would follow so not good either

but looking at that photo and the HDD cage the word that comes to mind is ragging it ...

I use to clean arcade pcb boards space invaders pacman ect in a washing up solution and then alcohol based dip
then as long as there dried out completely usually 24 hours in a drying unit there fine ...but you would be amazed the amount of gunk these pcb boards would gather on site in arcades / pubs ...

Most of the time would be idiots placing drinks on top of the units then falling down the back into the cabinet....
 
Should Half Life 3 ever be released, the RX-480 will be the perfect gaming card!!!

lol , the 4gb especially seems well placed ? Im waiting for AMD to do something with vulcan that should move things along as well, not just their new hardware. It will be good to see everything in full effect when that happens

So if AMD is fabless, who is doing the 14nm production or is it more then one

AMD's Statement

As you know, we continuously tune our GPUs in order to maximize their performance within their given power envelopes and the speed of the memory interface, which in this case is an unprecedented 8Gbps for GDDR5. Recently, we identified select scenarios where the tuning of some RX 480 boards was not optimal. Fortunately, we can adjust the GPU's tuning via software in order to resolve this issue. We are already testing a driver that implements a fix, and we will provide an update to the community on our progress on Tuesday (July 5, 2016).

GlobalFoundries, although I think their 14nm tech is licensed from Samsung.

Last time I checked though, TSMC's 16nm seemed to do better power/heat wise than Samsung's 14nm (Apple's "chipgate").

I remember people saying using 2 different processes wouldn't be a problem. Should have been obvious (it was to some of us). Guess Apple had no choice though, unless they paid Intel's rates.
 
I completely agree with this. It might not have looked good PR wise, but this scenario looks worse with all the severe negative spin on it.

It's really a none issue; the real issue for me is the heat and performance per watt. Seems Global Founderies process ain't ass nice as TSMC's 16nm version, as the shrink to 14nm should really have done a better job at thermals and power needs.

It's possible that what we have here is an overvolted and overclocked laptop/console part slapped onto a pci card. I would like to see what happens to the thermals and power once the card is undervolted and underclocked or a laptop with one in.
 
All the reviews will have to be re-done if they are going to lower the clocks.

Yep.... and if they gimp it to prevent it pulling more power, will that mean those who have bought it will now return it?

Still think it's a storm in a tea cup. When the AIB boards come out it will be a different card altogether.
