AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D

I already have a 7600x. I think for £50 over the 7800x3D that makes 9800x3d a lot better. I think it's the 9700x that's the most tempting competition wise.
Oh yeah, the 7600X will deffo hurt performance of the 5090 but you could still stick with it, get the 5090 and see how your performance is IRL.

Gaming at 4K requires more from the GPU but I’ll bet your 1% lows would be impacted by the 7600X.

You’d have to decide if you want the 7800X3D or 9700X, I’d probably go with the X3D personally given how much better the 1% lows tend to be with X3D cache.

Why don’t you get the 9800X3D?

If you are considering getting an RTX 5090, I don’t think you can consider anything other than a 7800X3D if you can’t stretch your budget to the 9800X3D.

You’d need to wait for reviews on the 5090 but given that you’d be gaming at 4K, it won’t make too much difference but I think going for anything less than the 7800X3D would impact your 1% lows.

I’d look at how the 5800X3D versus 7800X3D impacts gaming performance and take that into consideration.

It's looking very likely I'll go that way. I did just sell my 7600x for £145 so either way I'll be getting a new processor! :)

@Hostile_18 if you already have a 7600x as a placeholder you might as well keep that until the 5090 is out and prices for the 9800X3D go down, IMO.

You could then also see what’s up with the 9900X3D / 9950X3D, etc.

Edit: oh if you’ve sold it then that’s off the cards then :p

Takes time to do, amd said they've been thinking about v cache since zen1, it then took 4 years before they could do it.

So from the day Intel decide they want v cache as well it will take 2-3 generations before they have it

If Intel made the decision early after seeing amd then the next architecture might contain v cache but so far there is rumours to support this. I imagine by now they must be wishing they had it - to see their latest CPUs lose to a 5800x3d is brutal
Can't remember who done the tests but intels architecture doesn't benefit from more cache like amd's does . For amd 3d cache is bandaid for the high latency the architecture has

9700x £310
7950x3d £550
7800x3d £399

Does this CPU still make the most sense for me with a 5090 (next year) 4k native or 4k highest quality DLSS? I'll refer to your judgements because I can't decide lol. Purely for gaming.

9950X3D likely to be the absolute best to pair with an 5090 overall for gaming, if rumours of dual X3D cache and higher clocks are true.

I'm waiting for 9950X3D reviews, by then the 9800X3D will probably be £100 cheaper as well, judging by AMD's past releases. Retailers tend to price gouge for the first weeks when the CPU has just been launched, especially for AMD CPU's.

If 9950X3D turns out to be disappointing (highly unlikely) then pickup a cheaper 9800X3D. 5090 won't be out for months anyway!

Going to be 14:00 UK time :

I actually didn't lmao. Do I need to do the bios motherboard flash before or after I insert the new CPU? Lol.
Not sure, it depends on your motherboard. It might be fine. What motherboard do you have?

Always do a BIOS update before selling a CPU.

Your new one might need a BIOS update to be compatible but you can often get around this by using BIOS flashback (it’s just a bit of a pain)

Annoyingly, the Asrock motherboard CPU compatibility lists aren’t showing which bios the 9800X3D is bootable from… there’s just a blank space!

Means I’ll probably be doing a flashback update without the CPU installed… blergh!

Edit: I have a 870E motherboard ready for the 9800X3D.

I have a x670e Carbon WiFi. I last flashed it about 6 months ago. So probably will need doing again.

Updating BIOS with Flash BIOS Button
1. Please download the latest BIOS file that matches your motherboard model from
the MSI® website.
2. Rename the BIOS file to MSI.ROM, and save it to the root of the USB storage device.
3. Connect the power supply to CPU_PWR1 and ATX_PWR1. (No need to install CPU
and memory.)
4. Plug the USB storage device that contains the MSI.ROM file into the Flash BIOS
Port on the rear I/O panel.
5. Press the Flash BIOS Button to flash BIOS, and the LED starts flashing.
6. The LED will be turned off when the process is completed

Look at the BIOS version and the AGESA version that’s included in that specific BIOS version - each AGESA version has updated code and often for newly launched processors
