AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D

How true unfortunately. It's why I skipped the 2000 series and kept my 1080Ti at the time, the 3080 was a good deal again, and then skipped the 4000 series for the same reason, but this time I'm just gonna have to suck it up I think as I don't see another generational price drop this time.
yup..skipped 4000 series and running a 3070tife...hoping a 5080 will give close to 4090 performance for £900-£1k (same price as current super)..if they price it higher might as well get a 2nd hand 4090 with the extra vram....sure they'll be a few of those come up on the 5090 launch

So OCuk saying sold out now for 9800x3d? and gibbo said they had ordered 10,000...that's all 10k sold? 1 a person? or you think some people getting friends to buy and the ever growing number being relisted elsewhere at higher prices...that's a lot of pent up demand for a £450 cpu....if that's true, I'm expecting the 5090 to fly off shelves
He ordered 10,000. he hasn't received 10,000. (hasn't got any yet.) He did explain it deeper in the thread. but the first few thousand that he knows have been sent by AMD are already accounted for, hence why he stopped preorders.
5090 will be sold out within seconds. 1 or 2 to people that actually want them, the rest will be straight on ebay at double msrp.

£450 is a much more reasonable price than 2k so I don’t expect there will be anywhere near the demand for the 5090.

The integrated GPU is only just enough for 2d games at 1080p. Even Hollow Knight at 4k was low fps. Doom 2016 wasn't possible. I didn't try fortnite.

Geforce now streaming will probably be OK, but I've never tried it personally.

For a temporary GPU, a 4060 or 7600 will be fine at 1080p/1440p. You also won't lose much value in absolute terms when you upgrade (even if they somehow halve in price, that's only £100).
This video says otherwise. While not amazing, he shows that even games like doom eternal, tomb raider etc are playable on it (the 9800x3d uses the same Igpu.) half life 2 was played at 1440p and had 200fps. so claiming 2d games barely run is not true in the slightest.

I've got to seriously consider this purchase, if the results are the same for 1440p? I've got to try and eek out every fps possible to justify my 480hz
monitor :D

Anyone got any recommendations for where I can compare for 1440p results.

true but a £450 cpu doesn't magically double your framerate in games with a 4060/6700xt/6800XT/4070 etc....still amazes me number of people that were buying a 7800x3d and pairing it with a lower end gpu...a 7600x with a better gpu will in most cases get you better frames, esp at higher resolutions
I'd only buy a £450 cpu if I'm going to pair it with a bloomin' expensive gpu that can push it to it's limits( and that's from experience buying the 7800x3d on preorder launch, and then finding out the 4080 was £1200 and really with new gen, giving me way worse bang for buck than my 3080fe, so skipped that generation), otherwise it's unused potential and unused money that can be better spent elsewhere...

With that though, the 1% lows should be increased a bit more.

I absolutely agree for actual consumers, but the scalpers will still be all over it I imagine even at 2k.
I truly hope the scalpers lose a tonne of money just like they did with the PS5 in the end. They bought them in bulk, then many were complaining about how Sony released loads more stock into stores and the scalpers were left with loads of units that no one wanted to buy.

Absolutely. If they do scalp it then I hope they end up sitting on loads that they can't shift.

I think a lot of people just like the fact of owning a top gaming CPU after being priced out of high end GPUs.

I came back into the desktop market when my CPU in my notebook had issues (it was socketed but I did not want to put more money into it).

The 3080 mobile I had, had 16GB of VRAM so stepping back to 12GB was annoying.

However the 4070 is really efficient, my entire system consumes 300W at max load from the wall.

I think people forget that CPU's aren't only for people trying to maximise framerates on AAA games... there are countless games/emulators that are CPU heavy (like 4x games, strategy games etc) mix that with wanting to have a good minimum frames even if they have a midrange GPU.
For me personally this will be my CPU for possibly 10 years, so I want the most bang for my buck when it comes to gaming, and I want it to last.

For me it’s about the 0.1 and 1% lows. Even though my 7800X3D is of course extremely good, the lows improvement for the 9800X3D is evident. It will also boost frames, albeit moderately, at 1080p/1440p. It also doesn’t hurt to have faster decompression etc.

I use a mix of 4K (S95C 65”) and 1440p (240hz). It won’t improve things much at all on my 4K TV, but will absolutely make a difference at high refresh. Mainly in the lows as said.

I would argue that lows are more important than overall frame rate, as long as you have decent frames that is. And the lows of the 9800X3D are actually higher than the average of all other CPU’s lol

100% for me thats one of the most important things. I have a 3700x and it stutters like crazy sometimes. High average FPS at 4k, but just crazy dips.
upgrading my memory and having newer motherboard specs etc are a nice bonus as well.

I have a 4070 with a tuned 7700 and can very easily hit CPU bottlenecks in most stuff I play. I run 1440p but use DLSS if available and I game medium-ish settings.

Edit: I'm not going to buy a 9800X3D, certainly not at £450, but it would absolutely make a noticeable difference for me.

Decided I’m going to upgrade in the new year.

Is there a go to recommendation for ram or mobos?

At the moment I’m thinking a b650e and a 6800 ddr5 but it’s been like 6 years since I upgraded so I’m quite clueless
