AMD Threadripper (Zen 3 59xx Series)

I think "normal" Threadripper is now dead. There will be Ryzen desktop upto 16 cores and Threadripper Pro from 24 cores and up. TRX40 is a dead end.

I would hope and expect Zen3 TR to be compatible with the current TRX40 platform, if there is going to be a new TR.

AMD have indicated a change to AM5 for Zen4 for DDR5/USB4 which would make sense for new motherboard designs for all platforms.

If a new mobo is required for Zen3 TR I think I will keep my current setup and swap over to AM5 to reduce costs and sell my TR rig.

AMD specifically said TRX40 was going to support the next TR variant and was one of the reasons to be ditching x399 and feel safe with TRX40, would be very surprised if they did a U turn on that as future upgrade was stated rather than assumed.

I mean for me personally, waiting for DDR5 and USB4 might make more sense rather than buying into the TRX40 platform if that is the case. Faster RAM and peripherals are going to make a big difference. I'd probably upgrade my external SSD to a USB4 one if that was the case.

There'd be zero surprise from me if AMD just doesn't release a Threadripper 5000. They don't need to because Intel has nothing in the HEDT space, and I don't really see many Threadripper 3000 users crying out for more performance like their kit is deficient in some way. With substrate shortages as horrendous as they are, it makes more sense for AMD to direct their limited capacity to markets that "need" Zen 3: the EPYC steamroller must continue, the desktop domination must continue and efforts in the laptop space must be bolstered. HEDT is a niche that's already in the bag, there's nothing to gain in the short term by taking resources from elsewhere.

That being said, it's looking like Zen 4 has been pushed back in the face of Intel offering nothing of substance for a while, giving AMD room to experiment with a few things, the cache-stacked chiplets being a prime example. To that end, maybe AMD are waiting for the 3D chiplets to mature and use those in Threadripper, holding off long enough to see what the Sapphire Rapids HEDT products offer. Certainly any gains Golden Cove will bring in its Alder Lake guise will be countered purely with the 3D stack Zen 3 enhancement, likely the same thing will apply to Threadripper.

Intel won't stand still forever. Rumours of an Ice Lake based Xeon being released, but that will only compete with Zen 2. I think you're point about substrate shortages is what this is all about. Threadripper is the lowest of their priorities, although not sure how many OEM Threadripper PROs they sell. It's good for the company reputation to have the most powerful desktop process you can buy, and they'll want to keep this lead.

Personally I don't desperately need faster single core performance, but it's a nice to have. When TR5000 becomes available i'll move up to 32 cores.

Indeed. It's Emerald Rapids HEDT that's probably going to bring Intel back into the fight, but I don't think we know what the underlying "Cove" will be to draw any kind of performance analysis short of rampant speculation. If Emerald Rapids is using Golden Cove and Gracemont like Sapphire Rapids then it's unlikely it'll beat Zen 3 Threadripper outright. If it's coming after then possibly it's "Redwood Cove" like Meteor Lake, and then who bloody knows :p especially as Zen 4 is in the mix at that point.

Argh dont know what to do am about to pull the trigger on 3rd gen but might wait. Decisions, decisions... buy auros master and 3960x now or wait?

The difference in performance is going to be pretty big, I'd think, if you scale it up to that many cores.

I pulled the trigger. couldnt wait for 5000 series so 3960x it is. I might upgrade it when 5000 series comes out.

I'm close to doing that as well. I really need a desktop computer. Laptops are OK and all but nothing beats having a real desktop computer when you need to do certain tasks.

I'm swapping my 1950x and work have offered to pay for the upgrade so I end up with a faster machine with more cores and it costs me nothing. I can then decide if I want to pay the money for 5000 series, that is assuming the Auros master board can cope with that.
