*** AMD ThreadRipper ***

At the moment I'm rendering out a Premiere clip, compiling a Unity/Oculus VR app and doing a Blender run while playing WoW Classic - in game it's like the system is doing nothing else - and I can alt tab out, open a Photoshop or browser window with zero delay - it's astonishing.

Is it wrong of me to be jealous

Is it wrong of me to be jealous

You know what to do... :D

I'm still wondering whether I made the right call with going Pro wifi over Strix, but I really didn't want Asus again. Maybe should have gone Master, but with basically no real reviews yet it's hard to decide objectively.

Okay cheers, I've gone for the Phanteks block but I think it's out of stock and so is my RAM, hence I currently have an expensive board and CPU not doing much. :(

I have a Bykski block for sale in the members area if you want to get going cheap (it is actually a really good block).

Thanks for the offer, but OcUK have kindly agreed to send the block now as it's in stock and ship the RAM once it arrives. I'll use my current memory for now.

Finally got my first Threadripper build up and running. Lot's of hard work, a few scares, but finally there.

Still need to check on my AIO temps, Push the ram up to 3600, but just going to enjoy. CB Scores over 13000+. I'm happy so far.

Nice one tommo. Let us know what temps you're seeing under that AIO when you get a chance. Since it's not full HS coverage I'm curious... AMD send out a similar AIO with their review kit, so I shouldn't think it would be too bad. You might want to lose the last 2 lines of your signature btw, before a Don sees it. The rules (which you read in full when you joined, amirite?) are 4 lines max.

Nah, not sure my PSU has the second 8 pin CPU power that according to the ASUS motherboard manual is necessary.

It'll happily boot with just one 8-pin, and you can always run and 8-pin plus a 4-pin. The 8-pin can supply ~288w, so you wouldn't want to run it full tilt with just the single 8-pin. You can put a 4-pin in an 8-pin slot btw, which gives you the extra 144w until you can sort out the correct cable or new PSU.

The PSU is capable, I just can't find the bloody box. But it's a 5 year old PSU now I think so should perhaps get a new one anyway. It's also not the one in my signature, which is odd as I can't find any record of what it is. Seasonic 1000W or 1050W gold springs to mind.

Ah, think I've found it. It's this: Silverstone Strider Gold Evolution 1000w '80 Plus Gold' Modular Power Supply. Bought in 2013!

Any idea if it would have had the cable, or if it's capable? I'm not sure what you mean by 4 pin, is that the same as the PCI ones as I had a look and the shapes on the sockets are different.

Guess you just look on the side of it, assuming you didn't take the label off and find out about buying a spare cable. No need to get rid of a PSU just because it is a few years old.

Ah good job.

No the 8-pins are sometimes split in to 2x 4-pins that fit into a either a 4-pin or an 8-pin. The are not the same as the 6/8-pin PCI-E connectors and will not fit (luckily).

EDIT: In fact if I recall correctly that PSU, has 2x 4+4pin EPS cables.

Let us know how you get on with that MB. That was my intial decision, but like you there were no reviews, and as it turned out no stock.

Yeah this AIO, idling at 42 Degrees I don't think that's great. I never realised that Threadripper cooling is not in the best state. After buying a Noctua was told that it will barely be able to keep it cool, forget overclocking. Looked at Full Coverage AIOs. Enermax v2 gunk up, Coolmasters klunk out. Nice, real nice. So I bought the prettiest AIO I could get, with 'Anti-Leak Tech'. The reason I have been on Air advocate for so long was fear of leaks. I can only pray.

Hmm, so I'll likely have another 4+4 if I find the box? Yes the only CPU lead I have one it is 2x4. I think I'll order a platinum PSU anyway but run it on one lead until the new one arrives.
