*** AMD ThreadRipper ***

Swore I saw someone say the other day on here that Zen+ would be compatibly with X399? I thought Zen+ was for the AM4 platform?

Zen+ and Zen2 are the same thing.

Zen is the architecture name (name of the processor core technology).

Ryzen or AM4 is the mainstream version of Zen.

Threadripper or X399 is the enthusiast version of Zen (which is 2 Ryzen's bolted together via their infinity fabric technology).

Zen+ or Zen 2 will both be coming to both platforms, as it's just the next arch in a line of Zen upgrades. It should first appear on GloFo's 7nm process towards the end of next year, likely coming on AM4 first, then X399 a couple of months later (just like with Ryzen and Threadripper).

Hope that clears up any confusion with all the names.

Is it confirmed that the AM4 and X399 platforms will be compatible with the next geneeation of Ryzen and threadripper CPUs? If so I would be even more encouraged to go AMD this time...

As above:

100% about AM4 supporting Zen2 and Zen3 (or Zen+ and Zen++)

They haven't said about X399. Be kind of surprising if not, since it's a brand new (and huge) socket. Maybe they've forgotten to say. I wouldn't put it past the AMD marketing team.

The biggest driver of socket changes tend to be improvements in memory. DDR5 isn't coming out until 2020, so I'd guess X399 will last quite a while.

Everything is on the processor itself these days which helps as well.

Given that LGA 4094 is the server platform socket also, having a lifespan of less than 3 years would be surprising indeed. I would imagine that AMD will be supporting it well in to 2020-2021.

you can never tell.look at x99 and ryzen still beats ryzen in most games even bf1 which is the best coded cpu game of recent times.id rather have a quicker cpu for 85 percent of the tasks i do than faster for 15 percent and shout about it louder :D

people say x299 is a bad thing for eg the top 7900 is twice as fast as a 7700k and 3x as fast as a 2700k/3770k and people call it bad lol.

I actually admire AMDs lineup there. It's very very clever. They have basically took intels top end and said hey.. we can provide a chunk more performance than this and drop $200 of the price, or if you want to pay the same amount then here... have more performance.

It's like kicking them when they are down.

it's an interesting line up. Must remember they're not true multicore processors though but seems like amd managed to stitch together a few quads with seemingly little downside and also lower manufacturing costs. As far as I understand the 16 core is 2 1800x's whichitself is two quads?

might have to give one a try for work pc!
