AMD To Launch RV770 On June 18th

So Loadsa suggests that the 48** series wont be as fast as NVidia's new high end because lets be honest, it wont, and no one gets on his back about it, whereas I basically came out and said that the 48** series will position itself between the 280/260GTX and the old 9series and everyone jumps on my back about proof......typical :p

Anyways by the looks of things ATi seem to be happy with their current coolers, i however would have liked to see a change in design! Obviously we havent seen the final ones but I may be tempted to buy from a company offering an alternative cooler this time then plumping for the stock coolers. Though to be fair I guess it will end up coming down to price as always :p

I hope the 4870 is between the 260 and 280 and at a cheap price but i don't think it will but you never know.

I think they might have changed the heatsink for the 4870. I the one from the page before, with the new shroud, but the heatsink itself looks similar to the one from the 2900XT, with 2 or 3 heatpipes in it.

Hey - I defended you :p

But to be fair, you made that statement before we had detailed specs on either the ATI or nvidia cards. Now that we do, there is a little more concrete evidence for the claim.

i think overcloker staff are testing new gpu like mad now just pity they cant talk about it. nda and stuff try overcloking core to 1ghz see how it goes ?

We finally have a screenshot that confirms most of the things that we said about RV770PRO, here. Our sources suggested that ATI is talking about a Radeon 4850 512MB name for this card.

The card at its top frequency works at 900MHz as we wrote yesterday, and the GDDR3 memory works at 1000MHz. ATI uses power play, a power saving technique that can drop the GPU clock to 500MHz or 625MHz, depending on the power state.

At the same time, the memory also works at three states. The top one is 1000MHz (2000MHz effectively), the second is 993MHz (1986MHz effectively), and the slowest one is 750MHz (1500MHz effectively).

You will need 1.123V to make the chip work.

Update: After thorough checking it looks like that 900MHz is a top shader clock.

RV770PRO can reach 900MHz

That is the top speed

RV770PRO can work at an astonishing 900MHz. This implies that RV770XT should work even faster. RV770PRO could be called Radeon 4850 512MB, but we are still not sure if this is the fixed and final name. This looks to be the right name.

Memory works at up to 1000MHz and we are talking about the 256-bit GDDR3 memory. The sample cards are up and running, and as was the case with previous cards, RV770 has power play and can download the card all the way to 500MHz and save some power. The sample card comes with 512MB GDDR3 memory.

Remember that ATI is about to sample RV770XT, the fastest version of the same chip that will come matched with GDDR5 memory.

Bring on the 1ghz core on 4870  with no mods

Cheers Duff Man! :D

Tho I think it was safe to assume it anyways! Ati have long stepped out of the high performance stakes though if these babies can overclock pretty darn well then they may just pack a pleasant punch! I will probably get one of the 4series anyways since it will no doubt be decent value for money!

Don't know if ati will be in the high performance this time round as if the 4870 is a good performer then an x2 version with the flaws of the 3870x2 ironed out may just bring them into that category we will see. Also if dx 10.1 games come out they may prove to be really fast as its looking like nvidia cards are still going to be dx 10 only from what i been reading.

Suddently June and July seems to far away. While i have no doubt that the 48** series of cards shall offer quite a big performance increasement for ATI cards.

how good will these be for hl2 source based games?

and are they really only gonna be 25%> than a 9800 gx2?

Lol they probably won't be 25 percent faster than a gx2 and probably won't be faster than a gx2 now the 4870x2 should be a good bit faster than a gx2.
Some people seem to think the gx2 is a slow card when its really fast only thing that lets it down is its 256 bus at high res. From what we know the 4870 is going to be a medium range card but could be wrong on this.

they might be better then 9800gx2 as its sli and some games dont scale good @ sli so bring it on and just wait for proper reviews how it runs on games and benches :)

not at all faster than a gx2? that is quite disappointing, what i have already is basically a gx2

what happened to ATI? now we are gonna get stinky prices on nvidia cards

+ ati cards for some reason really favor source engine and get really good fps in it

thats what i thought
