AMD isn't quite certain how to price its new graphics cards. It feels certain that it's new cards will be able to restore a lot of the former ATI glory, but at the same time it's feeling a bit uneasy because of the upcoming launch of the GeForce GTX series. AMD will only have one of the cards ready at launch, Radeon HD 4850, with additional supplies of the faster GDDR5-equipped 4870 coming in July. Later in August, AMD is hoping to launch the dual-GPU Radeon HD 4870X2 which is instructed to take down the GeForce GTX series.
Even though prices haven't been written in stone yet, AMD is going to pitch the idea of pricing the cards at $199, <$299 and $499 to partners at Computex. The only really uncertain of the three is the non-X2 4870, which has shown great promise in AMD's own tests and AMD feels that a price tag much lower than $299 is a bit too cheap. We should know more after Computex starts.
July is too late. They will have missed the boat.
You mean the 6-month update boat? 'Cause.. Y'know, July could mean anything. The first of July would mean only a couple of weeks after the GTX280 which is hardly that late at all, and would give AMD a good chance to gauge how nVidia's cards are performing and are priced, giving them an ample chance to act accordingly.
At the same time, it's getting a damn sight later than the May launch that was first predicted. :\
You know I thought the same, but I mean if its early July then fine, two weeks I can cope with. But chances are it's the end of July and that's as much as six weeks away (after launch). By then Nvidia will already be discounting there cards, specifically the 260 which is where the fight will really be. And have an extra month over the competing ATi product in sales.
8800 GT wasn't a stock issue, that was deliberate holding of cards to keep prices at a premium.
