AMD To Launch RV770 On June 18th

4850 xfire looks a good combination. At under £250 you're going to surpass the GTX 280's no doubt. There have been many hints of this in the 280 reviews

Exciting times.

what day are the 4xx0 actually out? is it still tomorow like the title suggests or has that changed at all throughout the life of this thread?

If that is right and the 4850 is only 25% slower then a 280 that means 4870 is faster :eek::eek: god i am looking forward to a 4870X2.

75% of the performance means it's the GTX280 is 33% faster than the 4850. Funny things percentages. ;)

And that won't be at high res either (which doesn't bother me).

The GTX280 will kill the 4850 at high res/lots of aa due to the extra memory and bandwidth as the 4850 is crippled with the 512MB and ddr3.

However, And the 4870 is meant to be 30% quicker than the 4850 so I guess it puts it on a par with the 4870 having ddr5 memory. Plus once the 1Gb 4870 comes out, that will help at high res too.

Lord only knows how the 4870x2 is going to perform on that basis though.:D

I have a feeling that for lowish res, 4850 is going to be your card. The 4870 might even take the speed crown away from the GTX280 at the same res.

It will then come down to a battle between the GTX280 and 4870X2 for the fastest at 1920 x 1200 and above with lots of aa/af applied.

If this is all true how stupid will people feel buying a 280 now at it's premium price to be outdone by a couple of bargain Ati cards.

Very, I expect :D

Can't wait for some more reviews of the 48x0! Shaping to be amazing cards if the info is correct, might be about time to swap out the ol 8800GT :>

I know Greebo but xfire a couple of 4850's for a lot less then one 280 and you have comparable if not superior performance not bad for the company that was doing so bad not so long ago :). I guess what this shows is if you two companys releasing new kit close together always wait be fore buying :D.

Hey, don't get me wrong. For £260 if two 4850's matches or beats the GTX280 at 1280 x 1024 and 1680 x 1050 then I know which one is the best buy ;)

I'll leave the GTX280 and 4870x2 for the people with 24" and 30" screens.

I went to my retailer today and kicked off as I have had no feedback for 3 weeks regarding my replacement 8800GT. The manager loaned me a 9600GT for now so I thought I would bench it for a laugh against the 4850 on Lightsmark.

The 4850

The 9600GT I have on loan. :o

So is the 4850 faster than my GTS at 1080p? I was thinking earlier that the 4850 might become my first volt mod card if it is.

You'll just have to wait and see. Most likely the lead will change from application to application, but we have to wait for a full set of comparative benchmarks.

Ok if the 4870x2 is cheaper by a afir amount than the GTX 280 and performs amazing in Crysis then man....sod next gen cards :p I won't need a crossfire mobo either so can keep my current board!

Ati is really starting to look like the smart choice and it's been a while since people were able to say that.

Yes - I'm happy that it seems that way. I just hope the 4800 series holds up to the high expectations we all now have.

It would be good to see ATI gain some market share. First of all it puts Nvidia back on their toes, since they've had a clear advantage for a good while now. Second - with AMD being somewhat trounced in the CPU arena it would be good to see them recoup some losses through their GPU wing.

Well if AMD can be beleived and the reviewers of the GTX280 have hinted at the performance of the 4850.

AMD says it's 75% of the performance of the GTX280.

If your GTS is less than 75% the performance of a GTX280 then yes.

The crunch is nobody is saying at what res yet.
