I do peruse wccf from time to time but always ALWAYS use plenty of salt with it.

Not been there since all the lies about the RX 480. Clearly they just make a bunch of stuff up for clickbait. Only time I hear about that site is when Loadsamoney keeps linking to it. lol :p

To be honest I don't know why we bother with that site at all. Just ignore and move on.

So Polaris is looking like a pipecleaner/stopgap product for 14nm, and Vega is the refinement that gives us a top to bottom product stack, including something at the high end (at last).

It was not so long ago that people were telling me why it had to be HBM2 for Vega.

Now we learn it can use GDDR5(X) as well.

Good marketing move AMD !!!

Hasn't AMD always supported multiple memory types on their cards? Besides, with the interposer, it would make sense that it can talk to lots of different things like multiple memory configs.

With the cost and availability of HBM2, it makes sense to put it on the high end, and use cheaper RAM on the mid/lower end at this time until HBM becomes cheaper and more mainstream.

I think where we've gone wrong is assuming that Vega would be high end only, but it turns out (if reports are to be believed) to be a whole product stack from top to bottom that will replace current Polaris on the desktop PC.

So the original Fudzila article says.

There is an HBM 2 card based on Vega architecture that should attack Nvidia in the high-end space.
But there will also be other cards, as Vega hits other memory interfaces and not just the HBM 2. You can expect to see GDDR5 variants too. Our sources had no information if there will be GDDR5X card based on Vega architecture but it would not surprise us.

So there might be GDDR5X, but not guaranteed.

Seems completely daft that AMD is supposedly releasing a new Polaris 12 card to fill out the bottom end and remove the older GCN1.0 OEM parts, if they are shortly releasing a complete top to bottom new range based on Vega.

I cannot see the entire Polaris range being that short lived myself.
There will be more than one Vega card but I seriously doubt a top to bottom range, I reckon nothing slower than the RX480, so that Polaris will stay for the mainstream and low end stuff.

At the very least there is supposed to be a Polaris second revision with better speed/power characteristics, but who knows how they will name it. They might try and market it as a new product.

Surprised they're replacing Polaris already, although may just be like the 290s.

Something obviously went wrong with Polaris, as they showed it months before release (think it was last year), against that Nvidia card (which i can't remember what was now), and it was sucking way less power than it, but when it came out, it sucked as much/if not more than the 1080.

May see if we can add it to the swear filter :D
