Well we need to wait for the reviews to see how their memory controller works. Personally i think the HBCC is the most interesting feature in Vega.
If it works as it should and you don't notice that you have a 8GB card and not a 16GB then its nice.
As far as i know its an out of the box feature, as it is hardware controlled, so in DX11 it will just work, in DX12 the devs need to enable it.

What we do know for sure is, it is Gibbo is "very impressed" and he does not strike me as someone who is easily impressed. Actually I will take that back, I just remembered he was impressed by some youtuber chick called nerdphilia when hardly anyone else was. lol :p

He's also the guy that wants to sell it to you :p

I don't think I would buy a 4gb card regardless of any promised special tech that makes 4 into 8. Especially if such a thing needs software support as well.

It would have to be 8gb minimum or nothing for me, but I am fairly confident they will have an 8gb version.

I can't believe they would have gone 2 years and not been able to increase the amount of HBM memory onboard from the Fury.

They have though. They're offering 4 and 8GB models, with support up to 16GB of HBM2.

HBM2 comes in 4GB and 8GB per die. Vega's photo showed 2 HBM modules, so that's likely the high-end version.

I do hope that the 4GB version is small Vega though, as in their Polaris bracket replacement.

I know I know :p

But:
He was also the one that tried to reign in that insane Polaris Hype Train that was breaking speed barriers here.

Plus we are all having a bit of fun here. End of the day it will be what it will be. We will judge whether we will buy or not by reviews and price for performance :)

I agree. Even with high bandwidth cache working well on the 4gb version, I want 8gb minimum to be on the safe side :D

I personally think this high bandwidth cache is to counter the fact that HBM2 is expensive. Meaning they can offer a more affordable 4G card and not suffer from too much of a memory penalty.

Issue with that tho is it might* need the game to support it.

I'd rather pay the extra and avoid any chance of having a memory shortage in the future.
You can safely bet your left bolok on Nvidia trying to trip the caching tech up in any games they help develop once it's out in the world.
Even if your names Hitler you can make that bet feeling safe in the knowledge you will still get to have kids in the future. :D

I Am in Rome! :)
AMD are in Rome!

Put the two together and what I have seen I am very impressed by!

Nuff said! :)

So... With Gibbo being "very impressed" with what he saw and Nvidia releasing a full fat Titan XP (panic mode), I get the feeling Vega is going to live up to my prediction after all.

\o/ YaY! :p

I really do not think Nvidia would have released another Titan if not for what they have probably figured out about Vega. Also look at how they priced the 1080.

Looking forward to Vega + Freesync 2 monitor combo :D

Has anyone considered that Gibbo is "very impressed" in a negative way? As in "I've known AMD to **** things up, but I never thought they'd ever manage to get things THIS wrong".

That would make sense in a world where he wanted more customers buying the 1080Ti.

rUQasuz.gif Wondering how they could be that impressive, atomic levels of power consumption perhaps. Heat levels exceeding a 4 bar fire. Super RGB with Plasma tubes covering the card for impressive bling

performance similar to the 1070

It'll be over 2x 580 or everyone is way off base in thinking Vega is their top tier card. So 1080 > is really a reasonable estimate hence Nvidia positioning makes sense. That just leaves price and the unique features and widgets, how important is vulkan and impossible unknowns as the games it'll really matter with arent released yet. Nvidia I guess wins on performance per watt?

The Italian in me knowing how strikingly beautiful the people of Rome truly are, then he's obviously referring to the locals.:p
