AMD VEGA confirmed for 2017 H1

The only possible saving grace is it was running poorly optimised drivers. I still think Vega, on launch, will bench somewhere between a 1080 and a 1080ti.

Pointless releasing it if it's not faster than a 1080. This may be why we haven't seen a release date yet, they may be trying to extract the very last % from driver optimisations for them to beat the 1080 at least. It would be very hard to come back from the public outcry if full fat vega struggles to dominate the mid range 1080.

If the 1080 is 'mid range' what does that make the 480 and Fury's, low end ?

On the other hand it was interesting that Nvidia released the new Titan before the release of Vega... I would have thought they would have done what they normally do and wait for AMD to release a flagship card then come out with a more powerful Ti or titan..

To me it seems they rushed the titan out before Vega because they know something we don't know and are shaking in their boots :) (kidding).

I know Nvidia have some reveal coming up but I do hope it isn't a 1080.5Ti or a Titan xxxpxxx pro shiny because it just seems crazy unfair on the people that bought the 1080ti and new titan..

I wouldn't be so harsh, there still are people who need Vega mainly for their screens, if nothing else.

Yes, they are effectively low end cards if you are looking at NVIDIA/AMD performance levels.

Ultra enthusiast - TitanXP
High end - 1080TI
Upper mid range - 1080
Lower mid range - 1070/Fury X (only in handful of games does the Fury X come close to the 1070, such as Doom etc)
Upper low end - 1060/RX480/Fury

That's how I see it at the moment at least. The fact that Vega was demonstrated in December and almost 5 months later we've seen no performance numbers is also not a good sign IMO (look at how they showed off Ryzen, giving us actual benchmark numbers well before release etc).

I have seen several people make a similar comment about Nvidia being scared by the upcoming Vega. To be completely honest I think it's more likely that NVidia simply doesn't care at all about whatever AMD do. They just release what they have when they're ready, sales are booming, earnings are booming and a lot of people are sporting Pascal cards. One can't be scared by something that doesn't even exist and whatever a demo shows always needs to be taken with a huge bag of salt.

We don't know how Vega will perform though.

At the end of the day, getting 130FPS in a game on a non freesync high refresh rate monitor will feel much better than getting 70 FPS with a freesync GPU/monitor.

Freesync is awesome, though it's can't make up for half the FPS that NVIDIA cards offer.

Of course Vega may turn out to be a compete monster and compete with the 1080ti, though I think we would have heard about it by now if that were true.

I thought the one in the doom demo was the lower tier vega? Which is supposed to compete with the 1080. The higher teir will be the 1080 and Titan x(pascal) competitor. Might be why nvidia release the Titan Xp just so it still has the fastest card crown. Also why nvidia made sure that the 1080 was faster than the Titan X to by cutting it down a whole lot and providing it with faster memory to make it the faster card. They did not need to do that if they thought Vega was guna be just a 1080 competitor lol. And cut down the 1080ti a little bit more to have more salvaged chips to make more profit. To me with nVidia being a bit crazy and price drops i think they know whats comming. However they have owned the market high end market thus far. Means AMD will have to come in at very competitive prices. Abit like Ryzen.

deep down that is what i think i just want the hype like we had with ryzen haha.. It's a shame really i finally got my first all AMD rig (in decades) but looks like i will be getting a couple of ti's if vega goes the way we think it is...

Arghhh my hype train is failing me :(

The only thing Vega needs to be faster than is the FuryX, after that it's about price and features. The only people that will get upset if it does not outperform the 1080/ti/Xp will be the ones that insist on having/taking about the fastest thing available, the rest of us will buy it if it’s priced appropriately.

I want the smallest Vega to be a smidge faster than the Fury X. Although preferably it should have been a 40-44CU 2560core Polaris card that should have taken that spot as the RX 580.

Then Vega 10 big and small, along with Vega 11 big can deal with the rest of the upper line up.

The RX480 is faster than the FuryX in one or two titles, due to it's massively increased efficiency. Overall the FuryX is the faster card of course.

Vega needs to be faster than the 1080 in order to be a worthwhile card IMO.

just hope the "4K gaming PC for under £1000" doesn't come to haunt them. I remember watching the fury x reveal and they were saying it is a 4k gpu but the games they were showing were running at 30fps...cringee :(

He said that's his dream, and goal. I think that's admirable. He also stated that for $1000, not under. So if they can pull it off, expect $999.999999 :P

With the release of Ryzen R5, I can see it being one step closer though. Just need a GPU that'll get there, as the rest of the system on AMD will be cheap.

Nah! WoW at High - Ultra settings :D

haha yeah although i do still sit there and smile when i play doom at 4k on one card and even bf1 on dx12.. although they are being pushed so hard you can tell by the temps the single card will get up to even under water lol..

hmm me thinks its going to be two 1080 ti's this year then.. i will just paint them red :)

WoW is an NVIDIA sponsored game, it runs massively faster on anything NVIDIA. It's not even close, unfortunately.

Even if Vega and the 1080ti were equal in most games, the 1080ti would have a massive advantage in WoW, due to the coding/development etc.
