AMD VEGA confirmed for 2017 H1

I'm bothered by the Navi mention, I hope they don't turn around and imply Navi's where the magic will be.
This. That would be very annoying and i'm pretty sure it would weaken confidence in RTG to be able to produce the goods.

Yeah that's got me concerned too, that screams more smoke and mirrors and deflection from the here and now.

GTX 1080 performance for $100 less? No sorry way too late for that proposition in the high-end.

GTX 1080 performance for £399 or less? that would do me nicely!!

Matching a year old GPU that can be had for circa £470 new even before AMD show their hand?

Nvidia could easily drop the 1080GTX to price parity with a £399 (or less) price point this far down the product lifetime cycle.... Not really a great show for AMD with Volta in the wings if Vega offers 1080 performance for £400ish in May 2017....

Tbf RTG have barely hit their stride yet, Vega is just the beginning of the rung.
Agreed.

Sending the AOC 4K G-Sync back by the way. G-Sync is nice, but when I went hunting for dead pixels I found there was what looks like dust stuck behind the panel/ ag-coating in 3 places. Either is that or a clump of dead pixels, plus the inevitable blb. Not happy with that at all and I can't be asked to play the return for replacement game.

Picked up LG 4K Freesync on members market for one third the money, at least the guy has checked that there are no dead pixels. Plus this way I can go Vega and have some fun with new tech. The Freesync range of 40-60 won't be as good as the G-Sync which is 30-60, but to be honest I manage 60 in most games and even the most demanding on one's won't dip below 40 with Vega anyway :D

GTX is a prefix now, not a suffix! There's no such thing as a 1080GTX!

Might be worth seeing if you can extend the FS range via CRU. Still waiting on FS2 here.

Got to agree. At least the 290X was able to hold it's own against the 970 that came later (with the help of some price drops) and FuryX came a good few months after the (original Maxwell) Titan X. But this time, AMD haven't had anything to stand against even the 1070 for quite a while. It's been way too long even after the Titan XP (the first one), so they need something amazing to make up for all that lost time.

But being the realist... I'm doubtful AMD Vega will be the knockout we want... and we need it to be. A lot of folks are hopeful that the Vega cards will be better priced than Nvidia's offerings. But then I look at Polaris for an example of that and the 500 series suggests otherwise. I just hope this isn't a repeat of what happened with the Fury cards a couple of years back (not as well performing and costing more).

I have a freesync monitor so Nvidia cards are not much interest to me.

So if I can get GTX 1080 performance from AMD for £100 cheaper then that's great.

You have to remember whenever I go for an upgrade I always look for the cheapest way of getting that upgrade.

I.e. my objective this upgrade was to get a 6 core cpu, 1440 res ultrawide ips monitor with a variable refresh rate and a gpu to power it in games at reasonable settings for as cheap as possible.

So in the end I went with an AMD R5 6 core CPU as Intel's 6 core was too expensive

I went with an lg 34 uw freesync monitor because the nearest gsync was too expensive

And now looking to Vega to power it

If it means having some patience and waiting then so be it.

Will be interesting to see if nVidia try and crush AMD with pricing, HBM2 (and Interposer etc) is NOT going to be cheap!
They can do this easily if they want to as I bet they have a lot of room to drop prices and still make a profit on the 1070/80/80Ti.

We are already seeing 1080Ti prices come down. Can be had for £650 now. When Vega hits I won't be surprised to see them at sub £600.

This is another problem for AMD interposer/HBM setup costs are dropping but AMD will be on the wrong side of that initially for Vega - while Volta will be on the right side as will Navi. Wonder if that will have implications.

Heat generation will be a factor for me this time round. I have poor airflow in my case. (Average) If Vega is too powerful and creates too much heat I might be better of going with a price reduced 1080. I imagine the 1000 series are power efficient and cool running?

AMD are not afraid to lose money, as we all know, and gaining market share and reputation/confidence back is worth short term losses or small margins. If you look at how they are tackling the CPU market, going at one segment at a time, and adding value to the product which is already highly competitive.

Nvidia only really reduce prices when they have to, and it will hurt Nvidia's margins which by all intents and purposes will harm their share price and worry stock holders more. So I don't think they would crush them, they may however reduce prices to match if the performance of the products is in the same ball park.

I would have thought Nvidia would have reduced the current 1000 series now in order to get as many people looking for an upgrade upgraded before Vega hits and potentially disrupts their market position. Knock off £50 for each tier and I think they'd steal a lot of customers.

I'm uncertain here but isn't RTG and AMD CPU division financially separate?
The Instinct cards give me hope that Vega can be a success.

Things have changed over the last few years so I'm not entirely sure how it works and finding out is based on reading supposition so who knows?
Before RTG was formed I was under the impression AMD controlled who got what and poured more resources into the CPU side of things
limiting what was available for the gpu tech's which in turn hurt what they could accomplish. I'm not sure how old RTG is now.

You forget though, they never dropped the FuryX prices...

I doubt we will see much reduction in prices while they have no competitor at that level. Many have already upgraded aswell as they got sick of waiting or their card died.
What gpu prices do this year will depend on how good Vega is and what price AMD set
