AMD Zen 2 (Ryzen 3000) - *** NO COMPETITOR HINTING ***

I think the expectations of some people are that it will be released in full today, and be faster than the leaks suggest. In which case they need to calm their expectations to something more realistic, like an announcement and some snippets showing capabilities of the 7nm process including possibly the potential for higher clock speeds.

Something like that yes.

Something like that yes.

I... more or less expect 5ghz to be achievable boost clocks.
Beyond that... I think Q2 for release has been all but confirmed and would match previous years (despite them being ahead of schedule as even I've pointed at, hoping :p ).

usually Intel fans wanting to pay less for better performance as they expected so much but gained so little each generation

I'm honestly not even that bummed if its a let down. Because now 9700ks are down to "reasonable" cost and stock levels I'll happily make a 9900k system build. But I would rather for many reasons go Ryzen3000 if possible.

All in all a good time to be CPU shopping!

Why do I feel like this keynote is going to be underwhelming?

Because of the raft of people thinking the keynote will give detail to the umpeenth degree and officially launch every Ryzen SKU on the planet within 48 hours.

It won't. I doubt it'll even give that much detail.

Why do I feel like this keynote is going to be underwhelming?

Because the bigger the hype train (and lets face it, its huge) the more room there is for failure. No matter what they release, the thread will be full of disappointment somewhere along the line. Even if they deliver everything thats rumoured and more.

Reality check time.

Purely through 7nm shrink alone, Zen 2 will be better than Zen+. The arch redesign will also bring some measurable benefits. With Ryzen 2K already within striking distance of Intel 9 series in all but the fringe cases, Ryzen 3K's improvements will negate that deficit. And will do so for less money.

After all this time, how can AMD equalling Intel for a good chunk less money be in any way a disappointment?

And if we get more than that it's a win.

That's your baseline, ladies and jellyspoons, if you expect more than this then the disappointment is of your own making should it not come to pass.

For me, I really want to know what in the blue hell Vega II is.
