*** AMD "Zen 4" thread (inc AM5/APU discussion) ***

Will the X3D chip negate the need for high frequency DDR5 memory?

Edit: looking at it purely from an fps gaming pov and not anything productivity wise that is.

It will use the same IO chiplet so 6000Mhz kit and you'll be good to go. Zen 2 and 3 used the same IO chiplet hence 3600MHz been the sweet spot on Ryzen 3000/5000.

Seems like an official price cut to the 7000 series cpus and not just a so called black Friday deals.

It's a good start. However what really need a price cut was not the CPUs, it's the AM5 motherboards - combined with the cpu price reduction, cut the mobo price by 20% or 30% and then it will start to look reasonable to upgrade for users

What put me off is X670 motherboards are way overpriced. (Z790 is too.) If >£500 is the norm for a mid range motherboard, then I'm not buying into any new platform, not until prices are back to normal.
On top of that, DDR5 is overpriced, and still maturing.
Do I spend £1400 on a new platform for not much extra performance, or spent £1699 on a 4090, and get double the performance. I went with the latter.

System is all up and running, even managed to get a game of MW2 and seems pretty stable. I love new stuff, hahaha. Just need the new AMD GPU to come out now or if nvidia will be so kind and lower the prices of the 4080.

Are you seeing much improvement over your previous build? Read back a few pages and saw you picked up the 7950x! I'm waiting for my OC order update to send my case and RAM to build mine. So much for 24 hr delivery...

I'm surprised Coreteks has any followers left to peddle this insane twaddle to, given how far he fell from grace with a lot of his random Ampere and RDNA 2 speculation (e.g. Ampere was getting some kind of dedicated RT co-processor purely based on some weird numbers he'd been "leaked" and a chunk of the die shot he didn't recognise).

Personally, I'd be more worried about the 5 times an Alder Lake board warped because of the socket mount, rather than the 5 times a Zen 4 board had a glitchy BIOS.

if that was really a problem we would be hearing much more about it
Give it time, you only have to look at X470 with the USB issues when using PCIe Gen 4 bandwidth for both GPU and Storage. Took a long while for them to listen, track down the problem and fix it with a bios update.
So could well be a certain combination of hardware and settings to trigger this.

These are typical of the sort of faults i expect to see when people use too aggressive BCLK overclocking, i expect to see this with people who know enough to get themselves in to trouble but not enough and too arrogant to realise they are at fault.

I never did like him......

Ended up ordering:
7950X
ASUS ROG STRIX B650E-E
32GB (2x16GB) Corsair DDR5 Vengeance CL36 Expo
1TB WD Black SN850X, M.2

I am not looking forward to the upgrade as I need to pull my old stuff out of the case then put it in an old spare case as I need to keep my work stuff running until the new parts are up and running. Also, hope the Liquid Freezer II 360 is compatible, if not will be using the cooler that came with the 3900X. Think I will test it outside the case before removing the old hardware.
