*** AMD "Zen 4" thread (inc AM5/APU discussion) ***

Looks like the flagship ASRock X670E Taichi boards have had a BIOS update (1.11.AS06 Beta) that adds high voltage mode for all DRAM voltages:
"Add High Voltage Mode for VDDIO"

That should allow all DRAM voltages to be set to 1.5V (or even higher if you dare).

Probably would help with lowering timings a bit (currently, lowest I can get mine is CL30).

And some optimizations to system stability.

Hopefully we'll get these changes included with the 1.12 BIOS soon, for other ASRock boards.

News about the 12 core 7900x3D has me interested but not sure if it’s going to significantly improve my gaming experience going from a 5800x3D/4900 and also my wife will kill me probably…decisions.. decisions

Most excellent. A shame the option to wait and see is not an option for me anymore, but I doubt I'll be able to afford an 7950x3d anyway. :p

For anyone waiting and it does drop, have fun, I'm sure it'll be a blast. :D

I'm after a bit of advice please. After reading the previous leaks that the new 3d chips would be 8 core only again I ordered a 7900x in the black Friday sale. Given this new info posted earlier, would you send back the 7900x and wait for the new 3d version?

I game at 3440x1440 and do some photoshop and very occasionally some video editing

Always easier to say sorry than ask permission, that’s my plan anyway

What do you have to use as CPU in the meantime? If they announce in CES, hopefully they'll be available in the following weeks. I think March was rumored. That's many weeks of potential waiting.

All the launch 7000 series (as well as Intel 13th gen) will be worth considerably less overnight once Zen4X3D launches IMO (again assuming they gain as much as Zen 3 did from 3Dcache, which they should).

The more important question is did you order the board and RAM as well, or just the CPU? If it was just the CPU, then it is a much easier choice.

Just ordered the cpu, it was the only part that was in the sale and I was being hopeful that the mobo and ram would have some deals in the January sales.

I still have my trusty ol haswell 5820k to keep me going, I've waited 8 years to upgrade so I think I can hold on for a bit longer. I think I've just answered my own question haven't I

Good news but AMD really needs to get it's partners to start producing some cheaper AM5 motherboards.

I was looking at an AM5 system today but the price of the B series motherboards is terrible with mid entry level on ones coming in at AM4 mid level X series prices.

Does make me wonder if there's much point in buying the 'X' versions of Zen 4 CPUs when using an air cooler. Air coolers can't really handle 5.4ghz on all cores (advertised boost speed of the 7700X), unless you are very lucky and get a chip that can handle a PBO curve setting of -30 on all cores with stability.

Does seem like the non X chips will be a no brainer for the majority of customers.

The Ryzen 7700 should be a great gaming chip, if sold for £300 (or maybe even less).

Latest leaks: X3D CPU's announcing on 23 January. 3 Models available, an 8 core, 12 core and 16 core. All models use the 170w TDP power profile which boosts up to 240w.
Up to 25% faster at 1080p when paired with RTX4090 vs non X3D Ryzen 7000 CPU's

I can see some potential value by getting a RDNA3 card and put the saved money to a AM5 X3D and bridge the gap closer to a 4090 though I have no idea as a 4090 may still be miles ahead.
