*** AMD "Zen 4" thread (inc AM5/APU discussion) ***

I went for the ASUS b650E-E as it seemed like the least cutdown b650, some of them look like sub £50 boards and cost £200. The motherboard prices are the biggest downside to AM5, the CPU prices are not that bad and DDR5 has come down some.

It's a minefield out there especially when you're trying to future proof. It doesn't help that there are next to no reliable sources for reviews out there, the normal media circles just seem to have ignored the whole situation; I assume as it's too expensive hence the majority don't care.

AMD CES Keynote, live in 5 hours.

I upgraded from a X370+3900X to a B650+7950X and am not disappointing at all. I didn’t notice how big the difference was at first but after using it for work a few weeks, its crazy fast. I think a lot of the difference is the platform upgrade as I also got a WD SN850X 1TB NVMe(X370 had a slow Intel NVMe). That said, the CPU is also crazy fast, and I have it power limited to save power, still hits 5.775GHz at 65W. The 3D versions should only be better.

Its not looking good for Intel, according to MLID anyway, i don't think he's too off the mark.

The new X3D Chips will take the gaming crown.
New None X CPU's from AMD at a lower price are basically the same as the X variants just re-branded for a lower price, while Intel are pushing prices up because the margins are just too low, way below AMD's even with the lower priced none X CPU's
If Intel try to relaunch their HEDT line AMD will re-badge their current 96 core or even 128 core Zen 4 EPYC chips and utterly utterly humiliate Intel.
The new Laptop chips that have just been announced are very good, much better than anything Intel have. Also having AI thanks to Xilinx, you need a discreet Nvidia GPU if you want that on an Intel laptop.

OEM's are losing faith in Intel, some already have a *shrug* attitude toward Intel commenting "Who cares...Intel will be forced to make AMD CPU's in 5 years"

Its going to be a bad year for Intel, if they don't get thier #### together already by the end of this year they are going to be a very different company going forward.

Not sure if it's worth replacing my 13600K but interested in the non-X CPU's. Prices are dropping fast, 7600X for £225?

Glad I got my 7x chip when I did as the 3D probably would not offer anything for my usage. Also, only 3Ding half the cores seems a bit disappointing:-) Will be interesting to see the prices.

I’m starting to look into parts for an upcoming AM5 build. I’ve read in a couple posts about motherboards with ‘bad’ nic’s to avoid, but can’t find any info about which boards/nics are bad. This was an issue when I built my z490 system and I ended up with a board with both a ‘good’ Intel 1Gb nic and a ‘bad’ 2.5Gb Realtek nic which I just never used.

Anybody got any info they can share plz?

Edit - seems to be the Intel I225-V to avoid, even the latest revision. Funny that last build I had to avoid Realtek and this time around it’s Intel. Wouldn’t have throught a nic would be so difficult to make these days.

The B650E-E I have has an Intel I225-V, the default driver Win 11 used when installing windows did not work but I updated it from USB and it’s been fine since.

Edit:
After looking up this issue, i had a look in the Event Viewer and have 180 e2fexpress warnings for Intel(R) Ethernet Controller I225-V. It looks like three happen when the PC boots so dont know if it a problem?

I think that's what my 670e-e has. In the end I just use Wi-Fi because it would constantly disconnect and I never was able to sort it out.

If it's not disconnecting all the time/slowing a halt then I wouldn't worry about it. The nic will only have problems for a % of people, it must be fine for most but I might as well avoid it just in case.

That's really annoying!
