*** AMD "Zen 4" thread (inc AM5/APU discussion) ***

Well there was a 10% off code on eBay which got me to a price point I was happy with, so I've ordered 7600 setup. I've just about managed with my 1700 to this point, so I think that will be a good upgrade for me and should last a good while. Hopefully my motherboard will allow me to upgrade the CPU down the line.

for [high refresh, top GPU] gaming it is
But I was looking for lowest real world latency, so the higher boost clocks of non 3d model

It’s to pair with a 4090, so I think it probably does make sense to wait and see what happens over the next few weeks…

AM5 should be good until Q4 2026 at least, I reckon:

They will abandon it when DDR6 becomes viable for desktop consumers, most likely.

It looks like DDR6 will have twice the bandwidth of DDR5, due to having 2x the number of memory channels.

According to Samsung, they expect their DDR6 design to be finalised at some point in 2024, I guess that the JEDEC spec will follow:

DDR5 will have been short lived then...

I'm impressed with the performance of 7600 7700 chips, in 1440/4K it's pretty close to all other top-end CPUs. My current plan is to wait a year for the 8700 CPU and move to AM5 then. Sure I could get the 5800X3D but I prefer the cooler CPUs and a quiet PC.

Indeed another two generations then. About 2026 expect to see DDR6. DDR4 to DDR5.

DDR2 - 2003
DDR3 - 2007
DDR4 - 2014
DDR5 - 2020
DDR6 - 2026 (prediction)

It really isn't all that long between generation of DDR anyways. PCIE 1.0 to 2.0 was similar to PCIE 4.0 to 5.0. And PCIE 6.0 is technically already all designed and good to go and PCIE 7.0 is looking to be around 2026.

So in 4yrs start of 2023 to end of 2026 give or take a month we are possible going to be seeing PCIE 7.0 with DDR6 on mainstream systems.

Oh and GPUs by then will be on GDDR7 with errors correcting memory by sounds of it too.

I think DDR5 will last longer than 2026. I also imagine we'll see dual memory controllers when they do include ddr6 on the first CPU's. This is something that really paid off for Intel this time around. AM5 would have sold far more units by now were there cheap ddr4 boards.

I wonder if the upcoming A620 boards may offer DDR4 versions.

CPU needs to have a DDR4 IMC (integrated memory controller) for this to work. Intel decided (years ago) for AlderLake and RaptorLake to have dual IMC (ddr4 & ddr5) and it's probably the best decision they made in the last 10 years.

I hope both Intel/AMD have dual DDR5/DDR6 IMC's for their next gen platforms down the line, gives us much more choice.
