*** AMD "Zen 4" thread (inc AM5/APU discussion) ***

Ha! Valentines Day.. say it with Ghz's. <3 :)

I think it's probably a wise choice to wait until the X3D chips are released though.

I've offered to build a gaming rig for my step bro using the 6900XT I bought during Black Friday.

I just don't know if going AM4 with the 5800X3D is a wise move or go AM5 X3D CPU if it's financially worthwhile at this moment in time?

Well all they’ve said (with a few slides) is that it’s expected to be around 15-30% (title dependent) faster than a 5800x3d.

Is that performance uplift worth it over the 5800? Arguably when you look at a full AM5 vs AM4 cost possibly not. But it does have longevity on its side and obviously it IS faster and supports PCIE 5.

I would wait if you can, once they have been released you can still get a 5800x3d if you decide it isn’t worth it but at least you will have all the information to go by.

Totally agree.

It's for my step bro anyway.

I'd like to get him setup with a decent gaming rig with that 6900xt and then he can upgrade in the future as and when it's good for him.

Ok I spoke to soon, the ethernet continues to constantly disconnect after a few seconds of working. I have opened a support ticket with Asus but I don't really see what the end result will be because even if they change the board, I'll still have the same NIC. They use the same one on the more expensive ones too, Hero and crosshair or something I think.

let me guess, you have a rog strix x670-F gaming ?

Zen4 owners, particularly those on the 8 or more core models. Do you get stuttering or freezing for a few seconds when launching monitoring applications such as HW-Info? It's as if when something is querying the system bus's etc, it causes the windows OS to become unresponsive.

CPU usage on my R5 7600 spikes to 100% briefly too. Launching it on my 13900k system in contrast has no slowdown or stuttering, though of course has many more cores so isn't a fair comparison.

It's the only "issue" I've encountered so far on my Zen4 setup to be fair and a very minor one at that.

Yes I do on my 7950x. Didn't happen on my 5950x but everytime I launch either HWinfo or Corsair's iCue software then the system just about freezes up for a good 5-10 seconds

I'm trying to find out why my games are crashing

Default fine, but when I optimise, games crash

Rog strix x670E-F gaming WiFi
Latest bios

Corsair Vengeance 2x16gb EXPO 6000 kit

M2. Ssd from Mt old machine

New PSU, 1000W phantecs Pro

7600X

I think it's even less than that. I mean I left mine on default (I got 6000mhz) and I used DOHCII, ran some ingame benches, same fps. There will always be the outlier but RAM is definitely something I would recommend people not to waste too much time on if purely gaming.

Edit: I think in the memory sub 8pack even said just get a decent set of lowest speed, it wont matter.

I'd agree its not worth fretting over (the newer platform architecture is the major uplift), but there is something about getting the optimal performance within budget that gets under the skin for a lot of people.
I think 3d v-cache now makes it pretty much a non-issue if gaming is the main metric you're interested in, boosting your averages and minimums without having to do anything, and far better than most could achieve with tuning and fiddling.

Gotcha. Hopefully this is a bug that can be fixed then. Not the end of the world, but a nice quality of life thing.

Not a Zen 4 owner but I have something similar with a 5700G ever since installing a graphics card. It can happen with any application though and it only freezes briefly for up to half a second. Didn't happen when I was using the integrated graphics.

Try disabling thunderbolt power saving in device manager.
I actually disable it in the bios completely as I don’t use it.
It fixed the exact issue you’re describing.

No, my 7700x is a joy compared to my 4790k was. Only thing I've noticed is that my 8th core doesn't like -30 and is only truly stable at -25.

This works thanks - disabled TB4 in the bios and now there is no freezing or lag while starting up HWinfo

that means it's the motherboard not the CPU, explains why I didn't have this on my previous x570 system, probably not all AM5 owners have it since TB4 is only available on some boards. I think what's happening is as HWinfo scans the system it gets stuck on something and lock the pc up until it gets passed what it's scanning. With TB4 turned off in the BIOS, HWinfo now starts up in 2 seconds instead of 10 for me

Maybe a bios fix will come around to that resolves it but since I don't have any 40GB/s type C devices, so turning off TB4 doesn't bother me

No problem.

It’s something to do with thunderbolt going into sleep mode when it’s not being used.
And probably a bug with HWinfo or the like trying to query port for info when it’s not being used or in sleep on start up.
