AMD Zen 5 rumours

Hardware Unboxed said there's hardly any difference in efficiency between the 7700 and 9700x.

The 3D chips will need to be noticeably better than these standard chips or it's going to look poor for all of Zen 5 IMO
Hopefully if the 9000X3D chips allow overclocking the core clocks that will give them a bit of a boost over the 7000X3D.

Daniel also noticed what could be called a trick by AMD's marketing similar to that Nvidia did last gen with naming:

Adjusting for the name it doesn't look nearly as impressive anymore.

These YouTube Spielberg's are over exaggerating. The performance is there, just use PBO or overclock manually. Could AMD of handled it better, of course. But its not a bad product, its just that AMD decided to target lower TDP figures.

I think AMD should have made these non X variants and labelled them green or with some silly marketing language to indicate their low TDP but good performance. Then released the X variants as extreme where TDP is throw out the window.

the title of the video would be better to describe intel than AMD, when you buy intel chip you get a free toaster oven rack for you pc or maybe they can include recipe for a cake and some bios setting to cook it with. Sorry Intel just had to :D

Though some reviewers seem to have got better quality chips than others and certain applications can see 20 even 40% uplift, the average gains from PBO max over a broad range of applications ranges from 5 to 7% depending on chip quality/ reviewer for basically doubling the power consumption which puts it something like 2-5% ahead of the 14600 or thereabouts for the same power use.

EDIT: Talking about the 9700X there and generalising a bit.

The main issue is pricing - they are lower than MSRP of same named CPUs of the previous generation but in reality not any cheaper than MSRP of the actual counterpart (performance and power use). And the bigger problem is that almost same speed and efficiency previous generation counterparts are still available and way cheaper. So, the pricing makes no sense at all as is currently.

I agree the pricing is really bad specially with last gen performance very close. I also agree the only way AMD can rectify this is reduce the price. There may be some performance increase with software update but I doubt it would more than few % points at best. Honestly someone from AMD marketing team needs to be fired.

What we really got was a lower binned 65w non X chip but with an X added on, removal of the value add boxed prism cooler and a $30 price increase for what is a mediocre performance increase in everything but a few select AI based workloads.

The positives are that AMD products while being overpriced at launch generally drop to a more sensible price fairly quickly and the negative reviews and resulting poor sales will hopefully accelerate this.

Pretty much my thoughts too. It's not a bad product at all, it's just really badly priced. And, sadly, this is just typical for AMD. :/ That said, I've seen retailers posting considerably lower pricing soon before release day, which suggest AMD did price hike last minute likely just because of Intel's issues, to milk the market whilst they can. In return they got a lot of flak from the "press" about it, but they might care less than we think about such things. Just like NVIDIA didn't care much when they released overpriced (and badly named 4080 12GB, but they got so much flak for that they had to change it) cards. Sometimes what we see all over the media has in reality very little influence on the actual market (filled with people who just do not know any better) - Intel's issues ended up in popular media, AMD's price hikes etc. did not.

AMD release modus operandi:
  1. overprice at launch
  2. maybe throw in some bugs or unfinished features (although that's mainly Radeon thing since there they control the drivers while with CPUs there is no way - outside of Linux - they can force all existing software to be re-compiled)
  3. get bad reviews
  4. a few months later reduce prices - sometimes substantially
  5. repeat for the next launch!
Mean while they ripped off their most loyal customers and early adopters and could convince themselves that they have improved their margins; it's only later that they remember that almost no sales at a high margins generates very little actual profit and reluctantly reduce their prices!
