AMD Zen 6 rumours

I think for servers its generally not supported to upgrade the bios and install new cpu, although it is possible. You are supposed to replace the whole thing.

Ive had a few customers wanting to upgrade ESXi clusters with more RAM. Very rare do we get CPU upgrades for servers.

Broadcom not forced them off to cloud services?

We're just decommissioning our last cluster now. Just keeping a single host on free vmware 8.0 for backup purposes for a while.

Funny you should say that we are doing brisk business with nutanix.

I imagine/hope we’ll get the generation after too. With the Ram shortages as they are, I can’t see consumer DDR6 becoming widespread before 2030.

I think there will be a financial incentive to do so, assuming they still care about the consumer market.

You will have pent up demand after the RAM shortage where a lot of users have been waiting to upgrade from older platforms but held off waiting for prices to normalise (not to mention waiting for meaningful performance jumps before parting with their money).

AM6 will move to DDR6 and the new module form factor, meaning module pricing will be high for early adopters.
Effectively the platform change artificially extends RAM price barrier to the Zen 7 product line meaning continued slow uptake/lower sales volume than could be otherwise.
In contrast Intel can release their counterpart and hoover up the pent up demand by staying on DDR5 (assuming prices have normalised by 2028/29), plus allowing existing DDR5 owners a cheaper upgrade path potential jumping from AMD to Intel.

Just some idle speculation.

Will need a significant upgrade from current. That last release they did was awful, pointless.
They tend to look worse if you upgrade every release. On their own they were okay if you had an older CPU. I'm sitting on a 7600 waiting for the Zen 6 X3D CPU, I'll be good for a while then.

True, I went 7600 a 7800 - 9800 but the 7600 was always temporary (pc was built with it on am5 launch). The 9800 upgrade was about £150 due to selling other which for the minor upgrade seemed fine.

Very a similar to me. I was just without a GPU for a good while so I held off the CPU upgrade.

If the replacement is the previously rumoured 12c/24t single CCD '10800x3D', then I'd say £600 would be 'fine', £500 would be lovely.
I'm really hoping that's the case, but if they stick to 8/16, then it can't be much above current pricing (or at least push previous generations down some more).

That said, if RAM goes up much more, I still won't be able to justify it (coming from AM4 and 64GB DDR4)

AMD focused all of the Zen5 architecture changes to improving database and high level server operations whilst offering next to nothing for consumers. They won't be able to get away with that twice in a row not with Intel and their new manufacturing processes ready to come online so I'm expecting to see a solid uplift in gaming performance with Zen6 (this is likely what the PS6 is going to run on so I'm sure Sony would have been nudging AMD to make this good as possible).

Hope so, though it’s unlikely I’d ever go back to intel with their platform lifespans and that’s before getting into purely gaming perf :)

Yeah I'm expecting good things from Zen6. Memory controllers are reworked, architectural improvements, smaller node - so better clock speeds, or more transistors for more power, plus more cores and more L3 cache per CCD. It should be very nice :D

If it's £600 they can stick it, I wouldn't pay that for a GPU and I sure as hell won't be paying that for a cpu.

9800x3d was $479 and 9900x3d was $599 at launch, I can't see them launching at much less than that (as well as ever rising costs for silicon).
To my understanding, 12 core CCD would also theoretically have a higher defect rate than 8 (with all other things being equal), as well as being the top dog for gaming (assuming it is).
I'd expect they'll drop lower after some months though, same as Zen4/5 have.
