AMD Zen 6 rumours

That’s not true, some motherboard manufacturers did enable PCIE gen 4 but then AMD blocked it with with future Agesa updates.

Here’s a post from Robert Hallock at the time confirming that much.


It is true. X300 boards had to met spec and the manufacturer was required to qualify for gen 4. Enabled and qualified aren’t the same, which was failed to be understood and where X500 set the standard. The responsibility was down to the manufacturers, but the manufacturers didn’t take it.

I’d imagine the same issues would be seen with gen 6 on x6/800 where some boards possibly could run Gen but the vast majority can’t.
 
Yep, I didn't have any Gen4.0 devices to test with at the time, but there was a beta BIOS or two for my x370 Taichi with support (and people over on HOC forums saying they were running it without issues)

High end end boards particularly asrock boards with signal repeaters could run fast enough on the primary slot at least. NVME not so much. My X370 pro managed it with both where my taichi only on the primary stable. I did only try with a couple/few drives, but they couldn’t maintain signal at the faster speed correctly. Maybe with a revised BIOS or different board, the taichi could have meet the standard, but I couldn’t get that system to play ball at gen 4 stably.
 
I don't think gen 6 will come to current desktop boards, even if it worked on 100% of boards. If it comes to desktop it will be used as a selling point for new expensive boards. For most, it will not matter anyway.

Haven't AMD already confirmed Zen 6 is on AM5?
 
It could be used it to reduce the per-device lanes: GPU=8xGen6, M.2=2xGen6...

Someone would have to deal with the bifurcation. 4x Gen 6 to the ASmedia chip then brake out to bunch of full speed gen 4 x4 slots would be nice,. Or 4x Gen 6 straight to a dedicated PCIe expansion slot, but I think desktop marketing depts would struggle to explain.

I'd be very surprised if Zen6 isn't supported on AM5, this would feel like a Intel level of abandonment which Ryzen users aren't used to.

"Supporting" AM5 until 2029 on Zen5 rehashes would be a pretty poor compromise.
It would be poor business too, AM5 hasn't exactly been a roaring success, hardware has stagnated. I've said before there's only one reason to change socket and that's DDR6 and with current pricing any DDR6 platform would be DOA.

X3D chips also negate the benefits of DDR6 for gaming PC's. With Intel's Nova Lake new socket (still on DDR5) also using X3D (big on die cache) DDR6 is not really needed for gaming.

Still need more GPU power however for 4K!

But, as with the 3.0-4.0 jump on AM4, not unreasonable to think it would come to AM5 (albeit with a new generation on boards for Zen 6... as before with Zen 3 on AM4)

It probably is pretty unreasonable to expect many, if any Gen 5 board to run Gen 6. Most definitely won’t IMO, especially anything costing sub many hundreds of pounds. Many budget boards struggle with gen 5 past the primary slot.

Yeah, I didn't mean boards (or CPUs) that are currently out, just future boards on the AM5 socket still
 
Zen6 28% faster than Zen5


The Ryzen AI 9 HX 370 boosts to 5.1Ghz, so at 5.37Ghz the per clock performance (IPC) is 23% higher.

In CBR24, at the same clock speed, so a direct IPC comparison.

Single Thread:
Ryzen 9950X 139 Points
Ryzen 10950X 170 Points +23% (16 Cores)

Multi Thread:
Ryzen 9950X 2340 Points
Ryzen 10950X 4317 Points (24 Cores) +85%

I think there will be higher clock speeds to add ontop of that for both single and multi thread, how much who knows? According to MLID they clock to 7Ghz, i don't believe that, seems too far fetched, but another 10% clock speed (6.3Ghz boost) sure why not?

That's a very nice boost over Ryzen 9000 series, personally i don't think 24 cores is necessary on a mainstream platform but The Rain Forest kind of disagrees with me? Mainly the top 1 to 5 or so are almost always 8 core chips but the 9950 is frequently tho not always in the top 12

With 16P cores and 32E cores (52 Total) i'm not actually sure Intel will beat these in MT performance, its twice the P-cores and twice the E-cores but with the higher IPC and added clock speeds the Ryzen 10950X is also close to 2X the performance, if intel can also get the IPC and clock speeds up then yes but knowing Intel has quite an inefficient architecture i'm not sure they can get the clock speeds that high on 16 P-core without blasting 300 watts again and melting them within 6 months. Mind you 52 cores already seems like (MOAR COARS) brute forcing it so who knows how desperately Intel want something they can point to that they do better on paper.

I agree we don't need that kind of MT performance on gaming desktops, the 24c zen6 and 52c novalake chip appear to be just be circle jerk parts to try and one up each other for no real benefit to gamers

Yeah, if 12 cores or 10 cores are the right price i'll get one of those, if not i'm happy to stick with 8 when upgrading, i just don't need more than that....
